This is an interesting place - it exceeded my expectations. Do join one of the tours - it's only $5 and the guide has lots of interest to share. Also, try to lift the gold bar on show! There is a demonstration of molten gold poured into a gold bar too - I recommend a visit.

We spent a happy afternoon at The Perth Mint having travelled to Hay St. using Perth's wonderful free buses. The building is impressive and was founded in 1899. Having paid to go in we had a welcome cold drink at the lovely cafe whilst waiting for the next tour to go. We were taken back to the days of to the days of the early prospectors with a replica campsite and an interesting talk in which we were shown the size of the gold nuggets found. We were also given a demonstration of
gold melting in the original gold melting house. This was brilliant!
After that you could design and personalise a gold plated medallion which cost 20 dollars and made a great gift. After the demonstrations we were free to wander to admire the coin displays international gold bullion exhibition and view the natural gold nuggets. Pride of place was given to the 1kg biggest gold coin in the world. Altogether a visit to the Royal mint is a must if you are in Perth. A unique experience to see so much gold in one place! The gift shop had some very unusual and interesting items too.

On our third visit to Perth we finally got around to visiting the Perth Mint. We really enjoyed the tour and saw the gold pouring and even got our own unique coins struck. Highly recommended

Renovations were ongoing while I visited, and they discounted the tickets to just AUS $5. Good thing, because even if all the exhibits were open though, I (personally) wouldn't find much to see and do here.

The exhibits, such as gold bouillon, the world's largest coin and observing a gold pour are novelties, but nothing really special. The mint played a major part in Perth's history and development though, so it's still worth a quick visit to get a grasp of part of Perth's "soul".

The collector's coins in the Mint's Shop are really very nice. They also sell jewelry, and you're given a discount with your admission ticket.

Readily accessible by the Red Perth CAT bus.

Took the tour although we knew it was under renovation, but it was probably a mistake as many of the exhibits were missing and the tea room was closed. May well be a better experience when it is completed. In their defence the entry fee was reduced because of this, but needless to say the retail part was fully functioning!
