Boranup Forest is just the most gorgeous piece of the world!
A drive through the forest is a must when visiting the area, down Boranup Drive, which starts from Caves Road just south of Lake Cave and re-joins Caves Road 11km further south, towards Augusta. If you're travelling along that part of Caves Road, then a detour up Boranup Drive is a very worthwhile and picturesque alternative route. The forest was logged over 100 years ago, and the karri trees that have regrown are now up to 60m tall and very spectacular. The area is full of birdlife.
The road is gravel, and bumpy, but suitable for most cars, although some of the side tracks are only suitable for 4 wheel drive vehicles. We parked on a side track and got out and went for a walk to a couple of spots where there are old picnic tables (no other facilities) and climbed to a point where there was a great view out over the ocean.
After completing the drive we returned north up Caves Road, and made a worthwhile stop at Boranup Gallery where there is a huge collection of local artist's work - paintings, sculpture, furniture, and all sorts of interesting things. There have a gorgeous cafe and toilet facilities are available there.
