I dined at this restaurant with some friends on Valentine's Day , hence the place was buzzing with couples, nevertheless the service was very good The interior is most interesting, I presume it was previously a warehouse and is quite unpretentious. The staff were welcoming and happy to help with recommendations of food and wine. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the polenta gnocci was excellent, my striploin of beef was cooked perfectly to my taste and the mushroom and red wine jus was great. As a side, we had a green salad with pear and goat's cheese, an excellent suggestion by the waitress. Even though our seats at the communal table were booked for the second sitting of the night, we did not feel rushed at all to be out at a certain time. All in all, I can't wait to return to Melbourne to introduce my husband to this interesting restaurant.

A real hidden gem in Melbourne's overcrowded scene. Have been coming here for years, and Gill's has rarely disappointed. The wine list is short and sharp, the changeable menu even more so. But it is all very good and uncomplicated. The setting is wonderfully authentic and hidden, down a lane in a relatively quiet part of town away from blasting music and touristy crowds. The interiors are cosy and gritty, the sort of space Melbourne does so well, feeling aged, authentic, like it's always been there.

Gill's seems to have avoided the faddish hip crowd, so it's never overcrowded with kids on a night out. A great spot to take family and friends, it has more large tables than most restaurants so groups are easily accommodated. The spaghetti marinara is one of the best in Melbourne!

The food is very good, and the service likewise. Unfussed, unpretentious, but with flair and innovation. It doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't, but doesn't dwell in being ordinary either. Good short list (board menu covering most people's preferences) of things to eat. Great wine list. Good coffee. A little noisy, with all the hard surfaces, but it's hard to find restaurants that aren't really cafes or diners these days...

We really enjoyed dinner with friends at this place. The food was excellent and the price was reasonable. The breads were great and the selection of Victorian wines was fantastic. We went for dinner, but the breakfast menu looked good too.

Had an excellent dinner here with extended family... if anything our waiter was over-attentive, but that did not detract from the great food and wine...
