“Modern, comfortable - but noisy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 16, 2012

We stayed here for two nights in March 2012. First the good points – the apartments in this hotel are quite large and modern. We had a two bedroom unit with plenty of space. The bedrooms were comfortable and we had all the facilities we needed (e.g. washer, dryer, etc). The staff at the reception were very good – friendly and always willing to help, with plenty of information on what to do locally.

The location is pretty good if you want to be in South Yarra. The train station and tram stop are only 2 minutes walk away, and there are plenty of nice shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. The river is about 5 mins walk away.

The downside – the hotel seems to be quite newly built, and the construction leaves something to be desired. The walls seemed very thin, with the result we could hear a lot of noise. One night we were kept awake until 2am by the family above us moving round, closing doors, etc. We complained and the hotel staff responded quite well, but it wouldn’t be a problem with thicker walls. South Yarra is also a bit of a trip from the city centre – so if you don’t have long in the city, then a location closer to the CBD would be better.

Overall we were pretty underwhelmed by the Quest chain, and wouldn’t consider them again.

This is the third year in a row I've stayed in South Yarra area with my family. After my week long stay at Quest SXY I would gladly return here over the other properties.

Quest SXY is down a side street off Toorak Rd and very close walk to Chapel Street. Great location.

There's an expensive IGA supermarket right at the top of the street (on Toorak Rd) or you can cut through the buildings Just slightly up from the entrance to this hotel at No. 20 into Daly Street and walk to Chapel street- Vogue Plaza, where you'll find a Woolworths supermarket, Big W, and other speciality shops.
Easy walking distance (even for the little kids) to many restaurants, South Yarra train station, and tram stops. Bring an umbrella as there isn't much cover.

We had a two bedroom apartment, (1 Queen bed, and 2 single beds) there is a sofabed if needed.
It's clean and spacious and there is a full kitchen (stove top, dishwasher, oven, microwave, fridge, pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, toaster, kettle, etc). There is a washing machine, and a tumble drier, and the bathtub was handy with my kids.
underground off street parking was handy, as there is very limited parking on the street, which is metered.

Room Tip: We had a room facing Chapel St (front of the building) rather than South Yarra Station to avoid 24 H...

The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Loved the room, spotlessly clean, well presented and a huge comfortable bed.
Location is awesome as well, with a new supermarket across the road, and so close to so many amenities.
Also nice to have free off street parking.
This place is great for anyone for any reason.

I'm Melbourne born-and-bred, and worked here in South Yarra for nearly 20 years before moving overseas. I also knew these apartments well, because I'd previously put many colleagues here if they were in town on short and medium-term stays. So I knew what I was doing when I picked Quest SXY for a return visit. And I recommend it, with a couple of caveats, very highly.

For me, the question is whether you want the quiet autonomy of a serviced apartment - where you can do your own cooking, washing etc - or whether you want an all-services-provided hotel with a concierge, bellhop, room service, turn-down on the beds at night, gifts on the pillow etc. If you want the latter, please note immediately: stay somewhere else. If you want the former - which my partner and i did - then read on at your leisure.

Quest SXY is down a side street off a couple of main arterial roads - Chapel Street and Toorak Rd. Its location means that it's generally quite quiet at night, BUT the neighbourhood is undergoing a huge building spree of apartment blocks, so you might encounter some of the drilling and jackhammering that starts early mornings. There's an (expensive) IGA supermarket right at the top of the street, and another one (cheaper and bigger) just over on Chapel (cutting between two building will get you there).

It's within easy walking distance to all the eateries of Chapel and Toorak, and more importantly it's an easy three minute walk down to the Yarra River walking path, which will lead you straight into Melbourne city, the Botanical Gardens, Rod Laver Arena, MCG, Southbank, Arts Centre etc etc etc. South Yarra Railway Station is also right next door, in case you're a lazypants (or, OK, if the weather's bad), but the walking path is wonderful on a sunny day so do yourself a favour. Trams on Chapel Street run directly south to St Kilda Beach, or North to the Vietnamese Restaurant strip in Richmond as well...

The apartments themselves are beautifully appointed (slick, modern, spacious - my hard-to-please partner walked in and said "ohhh, nice!"); the wifi is fast and easy to connect; pool and gym are pretty poor, but there are lots of alternatives around the neighbourhood; the staff could possibly have been more helpful and were occasionally a little distant (never unfriendly, just not-quite-there in the way young Australian people can be when they have to work on a nice day while they'd rather be at the beach). But that's a niggle, and I do get irritated by people who expect hotel-style service from serviced apartments; it's not meant to function as a hotel, so manage your expectations regarding the service they're meant to provide and you should really enjoy the stay.

A small extra: if you like your tennis, Rod Laver Arena does a cool little tour (45 minutes and only $10) which will take you backstage through all the areas where the Australian Open happened. I took my tennis-crazy partner's photo sitting at the desk where the players do their post-match press conference, and it looks amazing, framed and on our wall...

In short, this is a terrific apartment block, in a great location. It's not Melbourne CBD, but generally all the good stuff in Melbourne is on its periphery anyway. This is "real" Melbourne. My home. Enjoy it...

Maybe I am just unlucky but staying attain at the SXY Quest I was still confronted with annoying maintenance problems which resulted in losing nearly all of the Saturday morning of my short Melbourne break. The toaster blew all the fuses and the young girl at the reception was not able to fix the problem and didn't know what to do. After many calls to the manager I was asked to switch the main electrical board switch on and off. I did so but was not happy to be playing with electricity. It didn't work and finally the manager arrived from his morning jog. He showed me the switch underneath in another power board, the safety switch. He tried that and again it blew, so after three different toasters it finally worked and we could make breakfast. I asked for some sort of compensation as I my morning had been lost and suggested free Internet for the remaining two days, this would not cost anyone anything except the outrageous charge of $20 per day if requested normally. Yes that was fine I was told, but the cable was incorrectly plugged in for WiFi and I was asked to wait around while they contacted a technician. By this time half the day had been wasted. The Internet WIFI connection was duly made and I wasn't charged as promised. This was my second stay at SXY Quest and the third apartment with really annoying maintenance issues. In spite of it being clean and comfortable and quite good value I am not sure that I will be staying there again.

Room Tip: Check out all the amenities before settling in for the night. There are just too many annoying thin...
