We ate here during the F1 weekend in Melbourne and expected the place to be busy. But it was rammed and uncomfortably busy. We were forced to nearly sit on each other's laps in the bar before dinner and then unceremoniously told that we could not all go to dinner because the table had only been booked for certain number. We knew that and weren't expecting our friends to join us anyway.
The tables downstairs are packed in and there is little privacy.
We at the six course chef's suggestion menu and it was excellent food. Scallop sashimi, black cod, wagyu beef and chocolate fondant were all wonderful.
The service was average but the ambiance terrible compared to the sereness of the London Nobu.
It's probably better on a quieter weekend but I don't think that the Crown complex ever really gets quiet...

Great food, good atmosphere, good service. The Melbourne branch lived up to the Nobu standard. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you want fine dinning.

This swanky and supposedly trendy restaurant is situated in the crown plaza. It's a Japanese restaurant with a few branches around the world. One of the owners is Robert De Niro.

The interior is dimly lit and rather than a table cloth affair it's a bistro style experience, which was a very disappointing start for a supposedly high class restaurant.

We ordered tempura baby king prawns, tempura snow crab, deep fried flounder, eel sushi and soft shell crab sushi.

When we finally got our food which took forever, the portions were incredibly small and left us with the feeling we were ripped off.

The quality of the food was also extremely disappointing, the flounder was overcooked, the sushi was tasteless especially the soft shell crab sushi, one couldn't taste the crab at all and the snow crab was dry and overcooked.

The service was also very poor for a high class restaurant. When we were asked if we could navigate the menu, we replied no, expecting to be guided thru the menu. But no, the Waiter looked surprised and walked off!! When they came to clear our table every so often, one of the waitresses knocked my chopsticks on the dirty table and didn't bother to replace them! We had the impression that the staff were not helpful or friendly at all. Worst of all was the long waiting times for our food. We felt as though we were sitting in a cheap fast food restaurant but without the cheap prices!

The chopsticks are also of the cheap nasty variety jammed into a chopstick holder so that you can't remove the chopsticks with grace but with force, not helpful for a lady at all.

We ended up having to go to another restaurant to get some more food as the portions in this place were so minuscule, and we were still very hungry.

Overall an dreadful dining experience coupled with awful service and food. Avoid this place and don't get ripped off, there are much better high end restaurants at the crown plaza. This place gives japanese restaurants a bad name.
