Description: Situated on the edge of Chinatown and the Greek precinct of Melbourne's central business district, our original Izakaya Chuji restaurant has been bringing izakaya style dining to Melburnians since 1989. A wide range of classic izakaya dishes is available, and can be accompanied by a wide selection of sake, shochu, beer and umeshu from our sister bar Nihonshu.

Once while travelling in Thailand, I saw a sign on a restaurant which said "No Worry For About Decoration". Sure the grammar was not right but I thought... you know what, you are absolutely right, I am not planning on eating the table and chairs. Izakaya Chuji is exactly the same. From the outside this place may not look like much, but they make up for it in the food.
Izakaya Chuji is a local of mine. You know what you are going to get and that it will be of good quality. On a few occasions I have been there with Japanese business people who must have turned a meeting into a early dinner and look like they are about to bust to a karaoke bar after, which adds to the charm.

Decided this month that I would have a little celebration for an occasion here with several friends and my partner, after probably about 1 year absent from going to this restaurant.

I've been here a while back even before the sister bar Nihonshu exist.

as the name indicates, Izakaya is directly equivalent to a Pub. Serving simple tasty foods with plenty of Sake/beers to drink.

I must say that the taste of the foods has improved,we had a variety of sushi and sashimi, combination yakitori sticks, 2 kinds of Gyozas (1 of them was a special of the day), mixed Tempura, Gyutan shioyaki (Ox tongue), croquette, deep fried chicken, among other stuff as we ordered quite a lot of them.

Unfortunately... with the improved taste, so does the price of them increased significantly. Considering the size of each plate which was small, the price can be considered expensive for some (a small plate of just ox tongue could set you back about 9-10 dollars). There's a sense of them trying to be up market, fancy restaurant in terms of their price, but still serving ordinary pub food, which personally, was not quite right (like you went to a normal pub for a Chicken Parma but they charge you 30-40 dollars for it). Definitely not a spot for a culinary experience, more of a "Catch up after work dinner/drinks" type of place.

The service is not half bad... but do expect a slower process of the waiter taking your order. They make up for the slow ordering process by the foods flying to your tables in a very fast pace... so remember to pace yourself from eating them all in 1 go, afterall.. it is a Pub.

At its best, izakaya cuisine can be much better than this. The grazing style of eating is increasingly popular, but it needs quality food to enhance the anticipation factor of awaiting the next course. The food here is not bad - it is just not that good either. As such, the value for money could be better.

You don't go to Izakaya Chuji for a fancy night out or for cutting-edge Japanese cuisine. But if you want a range of delicious snack-style dishes that go well with beer, this is your place. All of the yakitori options are great (I recommend giving the beef tongue a go) and the oysters are excellent. Love the 600ml cans of Sapporo beer, too. A very laid-back and informal place - don't bother dressing up.

As an overall, food is average and expensive (i.e. not worth the value).

The avocado roll costs about $8 or $9 for 6 small pieces (see pic), but one thing good is that it's hot and I can see that it was just rolled. The ramen broth is alright but nothing close to yummy.

I think this place is more suitable for events like gathering/night-outs that need beers/sake. If you are really hungry (like I was) and wanted something filling, probably not.
