If you are looking for ambience and a place to chat with a friend over a relaxed meal with attentive service, then this is not what you are looking for - however if you just love Pho and are happy to be squeezed in with others enjoying great cheap Pho, this is a great place to eat. I go back for the char-grilled chicken Pho every time I am in Melbourne - I love it!

Mekong has been around forever and it is always busy and popular. Highly recommend it for a cheap and yummy bowl of soup noodles.

Spotted this restaurant as we were walking along. It was full to busting of all ages. Like many Vietnamese restaurants this is not a 'flash' place to eat but the food is fantastic. We both had the chicken breast pho. It came with lovely fresh herbs and chopped spring onion. Great for people watching to! All shared tables so don't expect your own! Really good value. If you like Vietnamese food don't hesitate.

Upon recommendation of friends passing thru Melbourne as well as the sheer chocka block effect in this restaurant compared to others in the area.....we decided to wait for a table.

Food itself.....
Generous helping and in Vietnamese fashion, large bowls with plenty of soup. Light beefy stock and meat cooked to perfection.

Guide to order:
Its an OrderByNumber takeaway style. Be patient. Best way to get servers' attention is really to wave your hand, make eye contact and they will respond promptly. Be ready with your items in one go. There is freelow hot chinese tea in thermos flasks on every table.
If you are a party of 6, suggest you order the Large sized items when it comes to the noodles or Phò. (3 - 4 bowls would do the trick).

Best combo is beef and tripe and beef brisket.
Spring rolls - the fried rolls were crispy and kids' favourites. There is also the infamous fresh rice paper wrap spring roll.
We did not try their one dish rice item but that too was available.

Looking around the shop, you will see some interesting pictures of yesteryear stars. I could only identify actor Sammo Hung and a few others who have patronised this joint.
Then there was the inconspicous notice on front glass (barely noticeable) stating something along the lines of " Bill Clinton had 2 bowls of Phò, how many will you have".

The only grouse is the terror that awaits all behind the door at the far end of the shop market "TOILET"......recommend you use the public toilets or ones in the the nearby shopping arcades.
