Description: Since 1968, Melbourne’s notoriously hard-to-please restaurant-goers have elected the Hofbräuhaus the best place for Bavarian food, Bier, fun and fröhlich. We’re passionate about our traditions and proud of our pure Biers hand-picked from the finest breweries in Bavaria. When you join us for lunch or dinner you’ll appreciate why we set a very high standard in providing quality hand-made Bavarian foods to family recipes that are guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds and your appetite. Having occupied the same spot in Market Lane in the heart of Melbourne for over 50 years, but steeped in traditions from the heart of Bavaria the atmosphere is like nothing else.

Had been there years ago and the food is still great as is the beer. The restaurant is clean and even if the decor hasn't changed, it is what you expect, as it is timeless. Suggestion, perhaps a few more new pictures of Germany (the mountains)would be great.
The staff were friendly and helpful with information about the food. It is not cheap but it is worth it. Will be back soon, just maybe mid week as it might be not so busy. (Saturday evening).

We used to go to Hofbrauhaus years ago, we therefore decided to go back after our return.
What a disappointment. The food was salty. The dessert; however, was great.
Unfortunately, the place has no ambiance any more. Nobody is encouraged to sing along, and on top of this, the music stops suddenly early in the evening.
This is in my opinion no longer a German entertainement venue, but a commercial enterprise attempting to maximise their return with little regard to their patrons.

Hofbrauhaus in Melbourne is a unique experience you most likely won't forget. Having personally travelled to Germany and Austria, being exposed to the food, beer and entertainment in these areas; I can confirm that Hofbrauhaus in Melbourne pays great homage to these traditions.

We dined at Hofbrauhaus as a family for a birthday celebration. Upon entering the restaurant (hall?, pub?), you get a feeling as if you've instantly travelled to the Bavarian regions of Germany. The atmosphere is very fun. We ordered Spaetzle, Pretzels, Fried Camembert and a cold meat platter for entree to share, and it was all very tasty and traditional. For mains our table saw Goulash, varieties of Wurst, Pork Belly and a big platter comprising a Pork Hock, Schnitzels, and more Wurst, with plenty of extra Sauerkraut, Mashed Potato, and Spaetzle to go around. The food was all very rich and hearty, and in my personal opinion, tasted great. Not to mention the portion size was large. Hofbrauhaus also had plenty of selection of beers from pilsners to light and dark wheat beers, and of course can be poured to 1L off tap.

As for the entertainment, there was a band comprising a drummer and accordion player that played two sets throughout our sitting. They were initially playing an instrumental set when we arrived, and in their later set they were accompanied by a vocalist, who herself provided great entertainment. I couldn't help but find myself tapping my foot to the folk-oriented music (that was very similar in tone to traditional folk-bands I have seen playing in Austria, despite their limited instrument availability). The vocalist got very involved in the crowd, which was not intimidating in the slightest. The music was loud, but it was not the loud that would detract from the dining experience. Our whole table was grinning and tapping along.

The pub is not a cheap experience, but for the quality and quantity of food, beer and entertainment you get, it is well worth it. I would definitely recommend Hofbrauhaus in Melbourne as it is itself a very unique experience otherwise not seen in Melbourne. Note that it is probably not a environment oriented towards children.

Cant beat German beer... Even if was in the expensive side of the beer tap, but food wasn't to bad either... Obviously not as good as germany but trying with all aspects. Music was a bit loud and could talk easily at the table or did they have the hang of the equipment... Sending out stretching noises regularly by mistake quite often. I just like German beer , what can I say , this place has it on tap

Great atmosphere. There is a band upstairs that plays all these German (or Austrian) little jingles, and it sets a good scene. The good news is that you will have a pleasant time. Bookings are advised. The bad news is that it will cost you an arm and a leg.
