Description: Since 1968, Melbourne’s notoriously hard-to-please restaurant-goers have elected the Hofbräuhaus the best place for Bavarian food, Bier, fun and fröhlich. We’re passionate about our traditions and proud of our pure Biers hand-picked from the finest breweries in Bavaria. When you join us for lunch or dinner you’ll appreciate why we set a very high standard in providing quality hand-made Bavarian foods to family recipes that are guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds and your appetite. Having occupied the same spot in Market Lane in the heart of Melbourne for over 50 years, but steeped in traditions from the heart of Bavaria the atmosphere is like nothing else.

We have been to Hofbrauhaus a few times and thoroughly enjoy it each time. I first went with a group from work on a Friday night. We went upstairs where at the late sitting (after 8pm) there is an oompah band, sing a longs, drinking games, slap dancing and lots of fun. Food is huge so think about sharing. Even the schnitzels would feed two easily. But they will give you doggy bags. Service is quick and cheerful. Loads of great beers and schnapps to choose from. Not a lot for vegetarians, but they can share the non meat options on the antipasto platter, fabulous selection of breads, fried cheeses etc. My son has had the pork knuckle twice and I had a pork belly . We both agree it's sensational. Schnitzels are great as are the saurkraut and dumplings. Not something you would want to eat every day but once or twice a year its great. Not overly cheap - usually spend $200 for 3 of us with a couple of beers. Would be fun for a birthday. Beware though it is very noisy. they also have a downstairs and a next door restaurant which might be quieter but we enjoy the beer hall atmosphere. Also open for lunch.

I went here last night with my mum. atmosphere is still great, i love the rustic feel. The service very good and the beers tasty, i did not mind paying a bit more for a nice German beer and it really was only a small amount extra. what really disappointed us was the menu has changed. I have been here several times in the past but not for sometime. There are a few meals completely gone like the herring entree and the rouladen gone. What we did order was very goo. 2 different beef dishes mine was rich but a little salty. The meat was tender. My mum is German and feels although nice has "westernised" itself, (imo)maybe it had to in the last couple of years?. We felt my meal could of been served with red cabbage instead of the more aussie version of a few steamed vegies. All in all a good night out but i suppose we were not expecting the changes. The servings are huge and it is worth a visit i just wish some of the old menu items would come back.

I've eaten here a few times over the years, however, for the first time in a few years last weekend. We've been to Munich a few times over the last few years, and this restaurant provides the setting to make you feel like you're there!!

Food was great and the portions were huge! Great value for money, great atmosphere and decent service! The beer wenches were all appropriately dressed in Bavarian attire to ensure you truly feel like you're in the heart of Munich!

We will definitely return!
