Stayed in the Formule 1 in november 2009 on quick three day trip from NZ. Hotel is easy to find and was only a 15 min walk from the main bus/train station. Heaps of shuttles or trams to catch if the walk is too far.

Upon arriving (at 10am) as rudely told that check in didnt start until after 2pm. The guy running the reception desk (behind the bulletproof shield lol) looked very stressed as reception had two people waiting for help. I had a backpack and asked about storage until checkin. Lockers are available down the hall in what appears to be a disused storage room. The lockers are cheap at $4 for 24hrs BUT be warned... while I was in there two lockers magically popped open after some people just paid! the recption guy was told and he muttered and got them to put their bags behind reception (note on checking out I decided to use the slightly more expensive options at the train station).

Room was clean and tidy, basic as stated but everything looked as the pics appear online. My view was of office building (with people working and seeing me laying on bed!) so closed curtains very quickly.... air conditioning was dusty and had broken fins but worked fantastically :)

Location was super although I was informed to be careful at night walking by myself down end of elizabeth street near river.... looked a bit rough with some slightly questionable bars but nothing that a normal person (or people) couldnt cope with.

Check out was a breeze and simply dumped card in return slot. No problems!

Would stay here again!!

Stayed here with a couple of friends in Sept 2008.

We booked this hotel mainly because the rates were cheap and the pictures made the rooms look big. Unfortunately, it wasn't the case. The rooms were super tiny without even a proper bathroom (it was merged with the room with only a shower curtain as a barrier). The inside of the hotel was dark and kinda felt like one of those dingy motels.

Location of this hotel was good though being close to downtown. Service was bad, everybody was unfriendly and irritated. No F&B outlets.

Overall, wouldn't stay here again even if we're on a budget; I think other budget hotels would have a better deal and rooms.

Was traveling with family, 3 of us. Booked a standard room with 3 beds. However one bed is a bunk bed which is above the main double bed. To be fair this was the cheapest accommodation I could find in Melbourne at 99$ for all 3, but the room was a tight fit for the 3 of us. In hindsight we should have gone for a family room. The room was very clean and modern. Shower was ok, but once you stepped out the sink area was covered by a curtain and was pretty much in the room. In terms of location the hotel is excellent. Just a block away from Flinders Station. Lots of eating places around and great access to Trams. The entrance to the hotel is very low key. The reception is on the first floor and the corridors were a bit smelly. The persons manning the reception were quite helpful and nice. All in all, it was a decent experience. Melbourne is an expensive city so when you go cheap I guess you can't expect the sun moon and stars. Not a place for fussy travelers.

For the price of this hotel we were expecting more than backpacker style accommodation instead it was well below a value or budget hotel. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. We had to make our own kids bunk beds twice, and the bedding supplied was minimal and poor quality. There was no hot water for 2 out of the 4 days we stayed. The noise from the party room next to us every night during the early hours made sleeping impossible. Our room was incredibly small to stay in with 4 of us and the design is poor - with wet floors and and a tiny curtain for a bathroom!

F1Manager, Manager at Ibis Budget Melbourne CBD, responded to this reviewResponded November 5, 2009

Dear "Not Recomended for Families"
The F1's offer some of the best budget style, basic accommodation. They have very competitive inner city rates and usually offer great value for money. Accor offers a variety of accommodation styles, ranging from the very basic to beautifully appointed luxury hotels. I was very sorry to see in this instance that there was a mismatch of requirements verses facility/amenity and services offered. Frankly the F1’s are not everyone’s cup of tea, nor do we pretend to be. F1’s try to be as upfront as possible about the basic nature of the hotel e.g. the advertising on all third party web sites and our own quite clearly states that the rooms contain a queen bed (made up) and a single bed (linen provided), also that there are no kettles, telephones or further amenities in the rooms.
Even then it can still be a surprise to some guests to find the very basic nature of things, which unfortunately can put things on a rocky footing. When you just need a bed for the night they can really save you some money and be quite satisfactory. If you need some level of service and room to play - we will have a mismatch of needs and unhappy people, which we really try to avoid. They are very basic hotels.

The CBD hotel can be a very busy place on a weekend with noise issues an unavoidable consequence. We have security staff in place on weekends and 24hr staff, so if they encounter or are informed of noisy inconsiderate guests, we can do something about it & do so immediately when notified.

The hotel has several instantaneous units for constant hot water that never runs out. It has been known for guests to have the mixer tap switched the wrong way, or for comedians to swap about the indicator stickers. However on this weekend we did have two units malfunction and it did take the plumber some time to repair/replace the units, and eventually he was able to just bypass them but there most definitely was a problem. For which we apologise to all of our inconvenienced guests.

We do hope you will stay again with another of Accor’s hotels and allow us to deliver the quality and service we are renowned for. Please be assured we appreciate you taking the time to offer your feedback. All of it.

Kindest Regards,
Hotel Manager.

The location of this hotel is the good for almost anything you could think of. Be it food, shopping, entertainment or nightlife. you name it, you got it. And all these places could be reached on foot.
I stayed there for 3 + 3 nights. The room size I got is reasonable, clean and with bathroom and toilet. It also has a TV. Towels are changed everyday. Bins are also cleared everyday. Check-in and check-out time is very strict. Strictly no early check-in or late check-out. Lockers are available for AU$4.
Internet is very costly. Do not use unless you are desperate.
The best thing about this hotel is its value. Its probable the cheapest hotel you could ever find in Melbourne CBD. Good security.

Location is no doubt great, right in the middle of CBD, short walk to Federation Square. However once you enter the building, horror begins to unroll.

To reach the reception one has to pass through a dark alley to the elevators which take for ever to come. The reception area is cramped and like a bank counter manned by unfriendly staff.

We had booked a family room which had a double bed and a bunk bed. The room picture on the web looked spacious but in reality there was hardly any place to walk. Dimly lit, with a small toilet and shower which can barely accommodate a medium built individual. The bunk beds were not made-up and when requested we were informed that its not a policy of the hotel to do bunk beds, strange.

Passages were narrow and like a maze, god forbid in case of emergency no place to escape.

Surprised as how a group like Accor could have this in their fold even if its in the bottom most category of the rating. We will never ever book this category of Accor again.

We stayed here just 1 night and happen to meet the Australian Open. This is the budget hotel you want: near coles supermarket, tram, flinders station, Southern Cross Station(walk 15 mins). Arrived early and we had to lock luggage $4 each until 2 pm to check in. The room is small as all formule 1 hotel. Only bad things is there is only one curtain to seperate the bathroom to the bed. As sergio2008 said: It is a clean place to sleep in a very central location in Melbourne. Nothing special, but the price is right. So I would recommend it for anyone requiring an affordable bed a level above backpackers, and with no requirements for internet access in the room.
