“Overpriced and lacking basic items in the room”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

This is not a hotel! The name is tremendously misleading. It's a glorified MOTEL or BACKPACKER-style accommodation, and for the horrific price of $130 a night I discovered that I would need to pay $5 for 30 minutes or $20 for 3 hours of Internet usage, $6 for a locker to store my luggage in on the day of departure, that there was no hairdryer or soap/conditioner supplied for guests, that the bed in our room wasn't even made up by housekeeping (upon arrival we discovered a pile of linen waiting for us on the bed), that the bathroom is INSIDE THE ROOM and the only privacy we had after showering was provided by a flimsy old curtain, and that the whole place was quite dirty, smelly (in the halls), and unkept. If you get an appropriate rate, this "hotel" might make an okay choice, however overall for the price it's generally advertised at we felt ripped off. The location is unquestionably excellent, however there are numerous better choices available for lower prices. We thought the Ibis chain of hotels would mean quality control of this hotel - apparently not! Any rubbish can assume the name and mislead guests into thinking they're making a reservation at a place of MARGINAL quality.

Room Tip: If you need an internet, choose a lower floor as there is no reception on top 6th or 7th floors

I've stayed here quite a few times, and I've enjoyed it every time :)
I recommend staying here if it's just for the night, or if you are traveling by yourself.
It's very safe, in a great location with Bourke Street, just a couple of blocks down the road, and clean. I have never had a problem here.

We had 2 rooms for 8 guys for a lads weekend to Melbourne. That's right, 4 guys in each room in 2 bunk beds. Check-in was open at 2am (after driving from Adelaide) which was a pleasant surprise. I had phoned in advance to see how that would work and left a couple of messages, but nobody returned my call, so I was expecting the worst!
Strangely enough, only the bottom beds were made up, and the top beds had the sheets supplied but still folded up. Lifts were slow, so we usually used the stairs (we were on level 2). Our room faced the street but noise wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. Breakfast is overpriced at $9 each for cereal and toast, so we usually ate out but filled up our water bottles at the kitchen tap. The beds were a bit dodgy (and squeaky!), but you're only paying minimum so you get what you pay for. The ladder to the top bunk I was staying on was held together with duct tape so we used a chair instead of the ladder. No fridges in the rooms, but there is a TV and clock radio. Great budget accommodation and we will be back!

We stayed in this hotel for 3 days and thoroughly enjoyed our stay, Being located centrally at a very convenient position right in front of FLINDERS STREET railway station on the busy Elizabeth strret, many places of tourist attractions could be covered on foot! A great way of seeing Melbourne is to move through the whole city by free hop in hop off tram and bus and stoppages for both are located very near the hotel Receptionist Sachin was very helpful in all possible ways and very courteous He gave us a roon having wooden doors to the toilet(room223)whereas all other rooms door screen in the toilet However room and toilet were very clean and neat,Bed linens and towels were changed everyday but beds were not made by the housekeeping staff,Common kitchen on the reception floor was always loaded with tea bags.coffee ,sugar and milk pouches and we could have made free coffee or tea any time we liked! Considering the advantageous position of the hotel wherefrom you can any conveyance to any place very easily, room rent was very reasonable.AC in the room was also very good supplying hot or cold air as and when necessary. There are a lot of eateries on both sides of the hotel belonging to all known food chains,For indians, there is a veg eatery on the opposite side of the hotel on the first floor of GORKHA INSTITUTE. It is called OM VEG RESTAURENT and charges only 5'5 AUD for a veg buffet meal consisting 2 curries.rice and nun as much as one can eat!

The room is clean and the bathroom nice also. The room is nice but the bed is a bit too big for a single person. The room also need the basic facilities such as water, hanger and etc.

The location for this hotel is best, as it locate at the town area. Easy for shopping and dining.

Hotel offered good value with prompt and couteous service. The rooms were clean and functional.
I would really have to reconsider staying there again though because of the lack of in house parking. A real pain for regional visitors!!

This hotel has now been rebranded the Ibis Budget, still the same company I believe but renamed. We stopped in this hotel on 3 seperate occasions during the F1 period as most hotels were fully booked. Each time the room and stay was of the same standard and was generally good. The first time we stepped in the building all four of our group with our big backpacks stepped into the lift (the other one was broken) and it took us to the first floor (reception level) where we got trapped in the lift for a short while. It suddenly turns to 100 degres when you are stuck in a lift so I started thrashing the door and it eventually opened. So we never used the lifts again, there was a staircase for fires which they don't mind people using. But it is a fire stairs and does smell like cement and metal. The rooms are basic but there is a place on the first floor for cooking and has free cutlery and free teas or coffees which is awesome little addition, also the sweets near the reception are amazing. The staff are generally helpful at all times. The rooms are spacious, only bad things are that the shower area is in the same space as the beds and basically had a curtain over it to seperate the area. and one of the 3 rooms we had in the hotel never had a fridge which was confusing. But there is a share fridge in the first floor kitchen. Also the wifi is really expensive. Otherwise the hotel is extremebly well placed in the heart of Melbourne CBD (city centre) and saved us hunting for hotels over the F1 period. Only thing I will say is they said they had no rooms on the F1 weekend, so we booked one miles out for them to later say "we do have some rooms for inhouse guests" which was a major inconvience.
But for the price and location, I'd definately stay here again if I went back to Melbourne. I went to a lot of hotels due to the F1 maxing out everywhere and I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: Make sure yours has a fridge Lowest level possible, avoid using lifts
