As a vegan I was delighted to find Shakahari, it's so unusual at a restaurant to be able to order many dishes from the menu. Loved the food, so sorry I didn't order the avocado/eggplant tempura batter dish, someone in our group did & I still have entree envy! We were with quite a large group, the staff were very patient & looked after us very well. I found the prices to be reasonable & the meal sizes were just perfect.
Shakahari will be my first dinner when I'm next in Melbourne....

Terrific tastes and textures here willl delight vegetarians and meat lovers alike. The signature avocado entree with eggplant and tempura fried is sensational. Also had some parcels xiao xiao, absolutely delicious. Great tastes and very filling. Oatmeal cakes were also a hit....the favourite among the entrees of the sceptical meat lovers. For main meal, we shared....not really set up for this, but we got by OK. The satay and croquettes cassava are terrific, very satisfying. The indian curry came with a good yellow dahl and the morrocan dish with excellent cous cous roudned out our flavours for the night. We got to try a broad range from the menu and it was all very good, tasty and filling.... and nothing left on the plates.

Shakahari was one of the first Vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne back in the 1970's. It was excellent then, and its excellent now. Food is fresh, inventive, and delicious. Only issues are:
serving size - they are on the small side; and value - a bit pricey for size of dish. Staff can be 'funny' sometimes too, which tends to give Vegetarians a bad rap, but hey, plenty of meat eaters are strange too!
P.S - a few years ago they moved into their current premises, which used to be the house of my first girlfriend back in the 1960's. Such fun.

Nice dumplings, and curries- tasty curries. Had to keep trying to grab waitresses attention as she kept forgetting to bring water, drinks. Food was very nice though - as nice vegetarian we have been to in Melbourne.

Great vegetarian food with a diverse menu. Tasty and pretty quick service - just what you need when you have just been at the MCG watching your team win another Grand Final. A great day all round.
