“High class”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

A place for special occasions, innovative but authentic traditional high end Chinese food. Many favourite dishes built up over a long period. Especially love the fluffy crab omelette and can't go past Peking duck. Service is very attentive if somewhat overwhelming, alcohol expensive.

“A Melbourne establishment but way overpriced”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

I have eaten at this restaurant many times over 30 years and yes the food is always good but is it the best in Melbourne, I do not think so. Since the change of ownership this place has lost its sparkle, the food is average, the servings small and the wine prices simply ridiculous. If you really feel like leaving a large amount of cash and going home hungry then make the journey. However there are many better places and some even allow you to bring your own wine.

Excellent food based on local seasonal produce cooked to very high standard. Service levels high without being intrusive.

“Melbourne Legend”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

My wife and I have been to the restaurant on our own and we have ben with friends; either way it is a joy, dishes that you do not encounter in other Chinese themed restaurants, but dishes that appear to be simple but are very complex in taste and texture. A very good wine list.

“Trading on its iconic status”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

The Flower Drum is a reliable and predictable venue. However, it seems to have lost some of its magic over the years. As a frequent visitor, I have found it somewhat disappointing on my most recent visit. While the quality was acceptable, the portion sizes were quite small for the high prices paid. Beverages were particularly expensive. The staff were polite and professional but didn't seem to be enthusiastic. Perhaps when a venue has been at the top for so long, some of the staff seem to treat it as a chore more than a pleasure to serve you. Many other venues, especially in places like Box Hill where there is a vibrant Chinese community, are far more affordable and provide far more generous and delightful food.
