“Consistently great food”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

We have dined here on a number of occasions, most recently to celebrate Chinese NY.
As always service is efficient - nothing exceptional but we return time after time for consistently excellent food. Unlike some Asian restaurants the produce is first rate, portions large - we like to go with a few people so we have greater variety.
Wagyu beef with black pepper is simple but exceptional, as is the pork and eggplant, roast duck and spicy tofu.
A reliable and predictable choice

“Great meal!”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

A lovely meal - very enjoyable! Very pleasant venue with good acoustics so we could carry on a conversation as well as enjoy a delicious meal! Steamed whole fish and duck on bean curd dishes were excellent. The eggplant with minced pork dish was very tasty. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends.

“Unpretentious Chinese restaurant serving very good Cantonese dishes”
Reviewed January 12, 2013 via mobile

For the uniformed, Crystal Jade is a Cantonese restaurant and, therefore, Cantonese is the predominant language here; not Mandarin.

Our table of ten Cantonese diners ate a wide range of very well prepared, tasty Cantonese food. The steamed Alaskan cod with ginger and spring onions (a classic Cantonese dish) was sublime in taste and texture. The aubergine with pork mince was great.

Cantonese desserts are not generally a high point. But, the glutinous rice balls are a must, even if you are already sated! These are filled with black sesame paste (a classic Cantonese ingredient). Try these with either the ginger syrup (classic combination) or the crème d'almond; both are very good.

The service is efficient and typically Cantonese; polite without unnecessary fawning. Yes, they move the food and empty dishes with speed because they want your table for another sitting; this is not unusual of Cantonese restaurants. Indeed, us Cantonese typically eat at such restaurants for the food, not to linger and quaff wine all evening.

The cost was excellent value; $400 for 10 dishes, rice, and five desserts. The fresh fruit was complimentary.

Clearly, the negative posts on Trip Advisor, are made by those who are ignorant of Cantonese food.

“Great Chinese Food”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

Very plain atmosphere, definitely family oriented, busy and loud. In the middle of Chinatown. I was dressed in shorts, sandals, and t-shirt. I had the Peking duck appetizer (very tasty) and Sweet and Sour pork and shrimp fried rice (both the best I've ever had), a beer, and a small bottle of their best sake. With tip $100. plenty of staff, good service. Large portions, my meal might have been enough for two people. It got fairly crowded before I left around 7:30, so I recommend reservations. Definitely will go back when in Melbourne again.

“Good food, ok service”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

For me a restaurant is all about the food, and Crystal Jade ticked the boxes there. Service is important, but it is a distant second to the quality of the food so if part of the dining out experience is receiving the best service then you may be disappointed. You won't, however, be disappointed by the quality of the food which was excellent. The place was packed which is a good sign so you should book prior, but there were quite a few people waiting to be seated so you wouldn't be alone if you decided to just drop in.
