“Cheap but not great value”
Reviewed March 26, 2009

Our 2-bedroom apartment was tiny, the main bedroom was just big enough for the bed, no side tables and no curtains to block the morning light! There was a group of Chinese students living in the apartment next to ours so our room constantly smelt of their cooking (unpleasant odours). At least we had a balcony with decent views and could get some fresh air into the place. Kitchen & lounge area was tiny; bathroom needed work (mouldy grout, damaged shower door). Would not recommend this place for anything mroe than 1 or 2 nights - there are plenty of better value options in better locations in the Melbourne CBD. We will not stay here again.

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was really basic, we were only there to sleep, thank god, because you could not sit in the room for a nice dinner or chat, way too small. The location was good, not too central but close to trams and walking distance to good shops and places to eat. The rooms were tinny. There were 4 of us and the 1st thing we did when we got up to out room was laugh. Could not believe the size of the place. we asked to chnage rooms and the front desk said we were stayinh in the bhiggest. The beds were tinny and their was only one mirrow (not good when there are 4 girls). The couch could only sit one person, way too small. The balcony was really narrow and faced the wall of the next building, smelt like asian food outside. We def got what we paid. Very clean!!!! (got points for that). Perfect for a cheap hotel if you are on a budget but def will not stay there again. Plus the place is run by asians and I think they lease the good rooms, racinh the main street for renters of melbourne. good luck

Stayed at this hotel earlier this year. Wasn't too hard to find but didn't exactly stand out. Customer service was pretty average. Reception/check in area was very narrow with not a lot of space.
Our room was nice, very basic but was fine for one night. Overall, not a bad hotel.

Stayed for three nights, and found it perfectly adequate.

Booked through lastminute.com and got a rate of 110 Australian dollars per night for a two bedroom apartment. I'd say that's a fair rate.

Arrived to find that the receptionist couldn't find details of our booking. They let us use their computers in the office to show them our booking email, and it turned out they had got a room reserved for us, they'd just forgotten to print it off.

Apartment was fine - two bedrooms (one with queen bed; one with two singles) were both fairly small but very functional. Bathroom was modern and clean. Lounge / kitchen room was again small, but functional. And it had a small balcony out over the street.

Location was excellent, right in the CBD near to the Chinatown area. Didn't seem to get much noise from the road (we were a few floors up) and we didn't have any problems with light coming into the rooms.

It's certainly not the height of luxury - it has a 'no frills' feel to the place. But for the rate we paid, getting a two bedroom apartment in this location was very good indeed. Might not look to pay much more than this, however...

My family & I stayed in a two bedroom apartment for 3 nights. The apartment was advertised as a superior apartment costing $140 per night instead of $250. Was it value for money ? I don't believe so....

In terms of location the apartment was handy and walking distance to everything you would want in Melbourne.

Mayflower don't have their own parking area so you are required to park in a parking station which can be quite costly.

The apartment was extremely small, only enough room for the beds and a small living and kitchen area. The rooms had small tiled square windows without blinds or curtains. It even meant you received a night glow from the evening lights.

In terms of cleanliness I found makeup on light switches, and cupboard doors. We were given fresh clean towels and bottles of shampoo and conditioner in our rooms on arrival.

The staff were every odd. On arrival I found the fellow very casual and on check out I found the girl very cold and unhelpful. I found both to be unprofessional.

In essense we would not recommend the Mayflower and in future we would choose to stay somewhere else.

The management is lucky to have a good location which is their only saving grace. One wonders why they don't turn this prime location accommodation into a good-for-value hotel. Not very much into the guests' needs. I was desperate and needed a place to stay for a few nights. I was warned by the reviews here and by friends who stayed there last year. Boy, were they true and worse when I experienced it. The place is appalling. Staff do not smile. They do not look like they are interested in you at all. The lifts (only 2 for 14 floors plus the roof - if you try going there, you will find lots of dirt reflecting the management's attitude for cleanliness) are like the world's slowest lift. The lobby area on the apartment floors are not ventilated at all. The fire safety door into the apartments are very noisy (probably not oiled properly?) when left to shut on its own. The rooms are terribly designed (even I know better). Furnitures are of the lowest grade possible. Carpets do not look like they have been properly vacuumed or even washed. Rooms do not have openable windows and there is only 1 air-conditioner (which is by the way terribly dirty with lots of dust) for the entire 2-bedroom apartment. No phone in the apartment to make or to receive outside calls. The kitchen is okay but the sink is not properly placed leaving it exposed to water leaking into the cabinet below the sink. But do not even attempt cooking as the cooker hood's ventilator channels the cooking air and smell right back into the apartment and not outside! I have nothing against Asians but the management is not professional enough in their handling of this place and gives Asians a bad name. The person in charge at night was always somewhere else. Once I saw him attending to incoming guests in sports attire, just after a game! Speaking of cleanliness, I saw the cleaners attending to one room and they did not have the cleanest clothes. I dare not imagine them making the bed! The general low cleanliness of the place can be readily seen when one visits the basement where the laundry can be done. The lift opens to an open store area - very untidy with all the dirty linen. Old exericise machines suggest that the area could have been once used as a gym. The laundry area is stuffy and has a small number of flies/mosquitoes (probably due to bad ventilation). The dryer is obviously not maintained properly as the dust filters are always dirty. TV did not show all the channels available. Several times there were no sound! Most of the guests here are young people looking for a convenient and cheap place to spend the night.

After reading the other reviews before we stayed here I was extremely worried about our stay and even tried to find somewhere else to stay. I was unable to do so and it was with some trepidation that we arrived at the apartments. Yes they are very small and yes the beds are mattresses on some type of wooden board, however they were not as bad as I was expecting. We all slept very well so there must be something to be said for a firm bed! The beds in our apartment had mattress protectors so they are obviously trying to improve the standards. We found the managers to be extremely friendly and helpful, going out of their way to find out information and print things off the internet for us. The apartments were extremely handy for shopping and the tennis which is what we were there for. There were only three of us so we had enough room but the living room/kitchen area was small. The bathroom was very spacious and clean which is something that I am always concerned about. We were able to get fresh towels etc when we wanted them and the apartment was cleaned once during our 6 day stay which we did not expect. Overall we were quite happy with our stay considering that it is budget accommodationand would stay there again.
