“Great room, terrible location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2010

The room was lovely. From website, we thought we had access to laundry facility in room or hotel, but had to go down the street and share the sleezy laundromat with 4 washing machines/dryers with the backpacker hotel next door. The internet connection was expensive. The hotel was on a great street, Flinders, but 3 blocks down from a "safe feeling" area. The hotel restaurant is next door, more of a lunchroom, very good food, friendly staff, and free internet; most reasonable prices on food in Melbourne.

This was superb! We would highly recommend this hotel. We got a great deal on the room and wasn't quite sure of what to expect. The room exceeded or expectations and had everything from; washing machine, dryer, separate lounge/dining area which could be closed off from bedroom, 2 A/C's:1 lounge and 1 in bedroom, ipod dock, balcony with a great view, full gym, spa, lap pool etc... All the furnishings were new too and the king bed was very comfortable! Fantastic location with the Spencer St tram stop right out the front, and the City Tram takes you anywhere around the city free! Close to the Crown Casino and a stroll to DFO and Covention Centre, this is a perfect location! Staff at the hotel were friendly and welcoming at all times. We will definitely stay here again!

The rates at my regular hotels in Melbourne had shot up to ridiculous levels, so I decided to give the Medina a go. I booked a studio apartment, but was given a 1 bedroom. The apartment had everything you could want, was spotlessly clean, and didn't have the institutional feel of so many competitors. It has a small lap pool and spa, and a well equipped gym. There is no restaurant in-house, but there is a charge-back arrangement with the excellent Cafe Keyif next door - room service dinner at no extra charge. Breakfast is pay-as-you-go, but the servings are generous and the prices most reasonable. I had a balcony, not much of a view but I have had much worse. It's on a fairly busy street, but noise was not a problem. Full curtains in bedroom only, not in the lounge. Overall a most enjoyable stay. Tip: in the one bedroom apartment, switch on both air conditioners - if you only use one, the other will freeze up and cause the system to stop.

For the price I got the one-bedroom apartment, It was great value. The location wasn't great (10-15 mins from amenities) however for someone intending to take a walking tour, it wasn't too bad at all. Crown Casino is only a 5 min walk, and beautiful Docklands a stroll away. Lygon Street with it's restaraunts a 40 min stroll, or a inexpensive taxi ride (night rate topped $12, as I recall).

Be very prepared for disorganised, passive staff. First night, my partner and I checked in at almost 1am due to my flight being delayed for almost five hours. 24 hour check in is very convenient. However, the hotel claiming to have strict non-smoking and 'no party' policies didn't enforce them too well. My neighbouring apartment was playing music wll over any degree of decency, and the hallway was hazed with cigarette smoke. It took three complaints over two hours for reception to take any sort of action. On top of that, I was awakened at 8am by someone entering (not knocking, entering) the room to check the minibar contents. I found that appauling.

The hotel isn't efficiently serviced. During our four night stay, we ran out of toilet paper and were advised that another roll would incur a charge that was unreasonable. The towels were not changed throughout the duration, the bins were not taken out. "Self contained" to a whole new level. The kitchen was great, though. Neat, tidy, cosy.

Apartment itself was a pleasure - modern styling, air-conditioning (came in handy with the hot weather), small balcony to accomodate my smoking partner. Has dishwasher and provides one complimentary tablet. Washing machine and dryer provided however powder is at an unreasonable price (4.50 per one use packet), so stock up on your own.

The biggest problem I encountered had to be the reception staff. I payed a deposit that I wasn't advised of on top of the cost of stay up front, which was frozen on my account until the end of my stay. On checkout, the staff neglected to unfreeze the hold before charging me the cost of stay minus deposit. I was notified when I rang Reception from Sydney after seeing my account doubly overdrawn, that when the hold was released by Medina on the day after, that it would take up to 72 hours for the money to be returned into my account. Meanwhile, I'm paying excessive interest on the overdrawn amount, as well as the overdrawn fee.

Be aware to have plenty of funds when entering into any transaction with Medina. I found the staff patronising when they were addressing my problem, advising me that the bank was aware of the circumstances. My bank (ComBank) was certainly not.

Not happy.

First of all, Australia is expensive. Period. This part of town is especially expensive as it caters to tourists and business travelers. The Medina apartments are very nice though. I arrived here after 2 weeks of travel and it was nice to be in an actual apartment, The front desk people were very friendly and helpful.

As to the location of this hotel, I would probably rather be at the other end of the CBD as a tourist. Most of the sights are down that way. Of course, it really is a reasonable walk to Swanston St. (10-15 minutes) so it is not as if this place is out of the way.

My biggest complaint it the cost of Internet--$25 per day! That is crazy.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2009

I stayed here with my partner for 3 nights the week before Christmas and I have the say probably one of the only positives was we got a one bedroom apartment quite cheap for this time of the year, the other was that the location was very central and therefore very easy to get around. However on the other hand, the room was very small, was on the 5th floor but our room looked right onto a railway line which made it extremely noisy day and night. The most unpleasant thing however was that there were no blinds or shutters on the windows which were quite large and therefore at night people could see right into our room, no privacy whatsoever. To add our bathroom door didn't actually fit the frame and therefore we won't able to shut the door properly. Wouldn't stay here again unless I really had to.
