“Great city location and great room”
Reviewed March 2, 2010

The Oaks was booked for me as I was working for 2 weeks in Melbourne. It is located in the CBD (Central Business District) but not too close to the busy parts - just 5 minutes walk to big shopping street (Collins), South Bank (river and restaurants) or the Tram and Train stations. First apartment was massive, but that was because it was build around the 3 lift shafts, and as a very light sleeper, the lifts though not actually very loud kept we awake !
The staff managed to find me a very quiet room which was superb and overlooked the Yarra River. The apartment was very well appointed, with a sofa, dining table and chairs and small kitchen area with large Fridge Freezer, 4 halogen rings, microwave oven and all the right utensils. As I needed to work in the evenings I was able to prepare and cook my own meals, after fetching provisions from a reasonably large Coles supermarket on Elizabeth street. Room service was excellent, replacing tea towels, scourer and washing liquid every day.
The Hotel Gym was reasonable with Treadmill, Cross Trainer, Cycle and Concept II rowing machine ! Also good selection of free weights and leg press machine. Pool was about 12metres, but was a bit strong on chemicals and dark, so tumble turns were a bit tricky, but overall one of the better hotel pools I've encountered. There's also a launderette in the basement for long stays .
Internet access is quite expensive at $27.50 a day, but there is a $2 an hour option if you just want to check emails once a day.
Good thing about the serviced apartment is the you can treat it just like a good hotel room or like a home apartment if you need.
Only had breakfast in the restaurant on the first morning, which was a standard buffer affair, with good selection of hot or continental options.
Would definitely stay there again.

I did the reservations online and booked a studio apartment for the parents who flew in for my graduation ceremony. They arrived early in the morning (~7am) but early check-in was not available until 1-2pm. Walked around the city and came back to check-in to a lovely room on a high floor with a fantastic view of the Yarra River and Crown Casino. Remember to request for the view otherwise you might not get it.
The room and bathroom were spacious with working appliances available for use in the kitchenette. We didn't do any cooking though - just the usual tea & coffee.
Location wise, it is not located right in the middle of the city (a few streets away), but it was convenient enough. Attractions were only a few tram stops away (with change of trams) to anywhere that we wanted to go - Uni Melbourne, Victoria Market, Bourke St, etc. Parents loved the short walk to Crown Casino.
Staff were polite and efficient in processing our check-in and check-out.
I would recommend Oaks on Market to any traveller looking for an affordable serviced apartment in the city.

Stayed for 6 days during the Tennis.& had 2 Studio apartments and we were impressed by the spaciousness of them and the amenities in each. Views from one were excellent -overlooking the River & city.
Pool and fitness area are relatively small but were never very busy & perfectly adequate.
we utilised the Bar and restaurant and service and quality of food was very good and reasonably priced.
On the downside only relatively minor points- No early check in & 1 room not ready until almost 4pm, replenishment of beverages in room didnt happen on a couple of occasions, and we had to ask on 3 occasions to have theroom safe unlocked so we could use after previous occupants had presumably shut it. The air conditioning in the bar maybe needs adjusting as the area was often very cold and it made it a little uncomfortable in there.
We have stayed in Melbourne regularly and overall this is by far the best hotel we have found- would return & recommend

We stayed at the Oaks on Market St recently after a concert at the Etihad Stadium. We called in at the bar and had a drink on our return from the concert. When we went back for a second we were advised that the bar had closed but they were still serving other people. When arrived in our room and rang for room service, we were advised that they could not provide a bottle of wine. They also advised that those being served in the bar were staff. So it seems that it's staff before patrons at the Oaks on Market. There wasn't even a mini bar in the apartment. Wouldn't go back and wouldn't advise others to stay!

I'm a regular at another Oaks location in melbourne but decided to try Oaks on Market. It was a great disappointment - the place was filthy. There was mould all over the shower, the tables were covered with drink marks and a sticky substance and old mouldy food was stuck between the table and the plastic information folder. My friends also complained thier apartments were dirty and noisy.
I'm going back to sticking to other Oaks locations in Melbourne and would recommend people try one of the others instead if they want to stay in a clean location.

Great location, clean and cosy rooms, small, but nice gym and pool. Allowed me early check-in and late check-out at no extra charge. Very friendly staff. Definetely highly recommended

This hotel is the best. Great location, clean, helpful staff, very roomy apartments and GREAT views of the Crown Casino. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment which has one bathroom and it’s tiny although the lounge/kitchen area is good. Great size plasma TV and fridge.
The few things I didn’t like about this hotel was there was no microwave, limited cooking utensils and NO BENCH SPACE.
Staff were always very helpful when you called reception for more towels, blankets, toilet paper etc.
Pool is heated and a great size, there is also a spa and sauna (sauna never hot enough!)
Gym is poor! Nothing worked (when we were there anyway).
Location location: 20-25min walk to Docklands, 5min walk to Crown Casino, tram stop is less than 5min walk which goes to all areas i.e. Chapel St, Richmond, St Kilda etc.
I would recommend this hotel and the coffee shop “Rush” next door for the best coffee ever!
