“Big Smiles, Hot Showers, Great Breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2009

We recently stayed in a double room with ensuite with our 3 year old daughter. We had a wonderful stay. The bed was cosy and more pillows you could poke a stick at we even got chocs on the pillow much to the 3 year olds delight. The shower was hot each morning and being non smoking rooms it was pleasent and fresh. The room was immaculately clean and warm. The breakfast each morning was a great start to our day the food was fresh, tasty and we could eat as much as we needed. Itr was so central for us that we walked everywhere. Iv'e read reviews of rooms being to small, walls thin and showers cold to this all have to say is our room was small but we only wanted to sleep there so it was perfect we hardly heard anything from our neighbours maybe a telly very faintly and the shower as mentioned was hot hot hot. we heard the usual rubbish trucks and night life outside but what do you expect in the middle of the city. Thank you Hotle Sophia we will be back and tell all

We have stayed at this hotel a couple of times now and found it to be very clean and the rooms well serviced. The hot breakfast each day is fantastic and saves heaps of money. The free tram and Victoria Markets are only a few minutes walk away and if you are going to the footy, Telstra Dome is only a couple of blocks. I think for the price we paid, $99pn, the place was fantastic and would definately stay there again. There is a small pub within the building that has great happy hours and very cheap, nice tasting meals. This isnt open late so there is no noise into the night. I have read that it is within the red light district, we have walked around at night and not had any problems at all. I think when reading some of the other comments you need to remember, there is just no pleasing some people no matter where they stayed!!!!

i was happy to do a write up for this hotel. It does what you need from a hotel. The rooms are spotlessly clean and new ( and i am neurotically clean), the place looks like it is only 3-4 years old. The beds are large i think king is the term and comfortable and they give you 3 pillows per person. From what i could gather from the staff the hotel is family owned and you can tell as they seem to have a lot of pride in their facilities. I saw a person (who i think was the owner) walking thru rooms with a paint brush covering marks and damage as they were being prepared for new guests. Having stayed 7 nights with hotel sophia if i am ever back in Melbourne i would like to stay here. The coffee in the room is great.

Spent two nights at Hotel Sophia at a great rate considering the location and improvements made to this hotel. The room ,although somewhat cramped, had a king size bed and was clean , comfortable and modern. The overnight rate included a hot buffet breakfast which was of excellent quality and served in an extensive dining room.
The location of the hotel is central to Victoria market, many eating houses and public transport is a matter of metres away. Would recommend to anyone requiring budget priced but modern and comfortable accommodation in the city centre.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Sophia for two nights and could not fault the politeness and friendliness of the staff. We had the first night facing King Street which was too noisy for us as we aren't used to non stop city traffic all night long. Explaining the situation of not much/enough sleep we were offered a room to the back of the hotel which was excellent. Both the rooms and bathrooms were very clean, and accommodated all our requirements. The tea and coffee in the rooms was great and being able to gather a couple of extras from the foyer if you ran low was hassle free to both parties.
We had read negative comments before on the hotel, but preferred to take the chance and were extremely happy we did. The hotel is in a great location, with easy walking distance to the Skybus, DFO Spencer St, Spencer St Station, Casino etc., and if you are a little more enthusiastic you can walk nearly all the CBD or to Harbour Town. Trams are just around the corner if walking isn't your thing.
The hot breakfast was quite suitable to get you up and moving while catching up on the news etc on the large flat screen tv in the eating area.
We were happy that we could leave our luggage, in their secure area as we checked out in the morning and did not need to leave the city till later in the day.
We would quite happily stay again.

Well located near the Queen Victoria Markets and the University of Melbourne, and comfortable, the hotel is very good value.
The staff were exceptionally helpful in helping us to find our way to our dinner meeting and in sorting out our check-in and seat allocation when the computer was malfunctioning.

On 17th Aug till 21th Aug, 2009 I stayed at Sophia Hotel in Melbourne. I did not expect much about the hotel prior my stay. However, i was overwhelmed with their service and location of the hotel. The hotel was so convinient as it was near to the free circle tram and victoria market. The staff was nice and let me check in early at 10am due to low season. Besides that, for Muslims, there are 2 Indian restaurants that provide Halal food nearby. A lot of places are just a few block away from the hotel. I would recommend especially for Malaysian travellers to stay in this hotel.
