I stayed one night at Hotel Sophia and was really happy with my choice of hotel. I usually stay in one of the big chain hotels for this particular conference and was pleased to find one within walking distance of where I had to go. Breakfast as part of the deal was a bonus - and a very delicious brekkie it was too! The room was clean, well lit, plenty of tea and coffee, the bed comfortable and the bathroom clean and well stocked with the usual. The staff were helpful and everything ran smoothly. I'll be back!

I stayed two nights in room facing King Street, window did not shut out noise from the street nor did the cheap blinds keep the light out. Room was tiny could not get my bag between bed and wall. Service was terrible and unprofessional. No resturant facilities or bar open on Monday or Tuesday nights I stayed. This hotel has become a joke around our company. Never Again

I stayed at Hotel Sophia for two nights on business. I chose it because it was centrally located and only $99 per night including breakfast (booked directly online with hotel). The rooms are small but nicely renovated with some homely touches such as plunger coffee and a more than adequate supply of milk. Many restaurants to pick from in easy walking distance from the hotel. Not sure why there are so many negative reviews as I have done alot of travelling (business) over the past few months and this hotel I would definitely stay in again.

Poor customer service; when we arrived at the hotel we weren't even greeted properly - just left waiting for at 5-10 minutes while people on reception made phone calls. Then the card for the car park didn't work, so we had to walk back to the hotel to get a new one. We went out for a nice, relaxing afternoon then returned and got our room card from reception and - would you believe it - the card didn't work, so we had to return to reception again. The room was clean and comfortable, with adequate facilities. However, the window needs double glazing and the walls need to be more than paper thin, as we could hear all noise from outside during the night and people in the room next to us in the morning. We were so relieved when we checked out!!! But alas, that was not the end of the dramas. A couple of days AFTER we left the hotel, they mysteriously took $150 from our bank account!!!
We booked knowing that we were paying a discounted rate and therefore weren't expecting the Hilton, but come on, this hotel is a joke.
Maybe they should spend their advertising budget on improving the hotel.....

We stayed 4 nights from 2nd February. We were a little unsure after reading some of the previous reviews but we were pleasantly suprised with the hotel. We arrived early , before check in time and our room was ready for us, we found it be very clean and were supplied with clean towels, coffee, milk etc every day. We had absolutely no noise problem at all from other rooms or traffic and the location was great apart from being in the red light district . (We were not bothered by that at all and maybe because it was mid-week we saw no girls and only one bouncer the whole time we were there). It is very handy to the free tram and certainly within walking distance to the city. We are going back to Melbourne in April and will definately be booking in to Hotel Sophia for this visit.
