Owner description: Completed in 1870, the Melbourne Town Hall is at the heart of the city's cultural and civic activity, hosting theatre, weddings, receptions and exhibitions. So many of the decisions that have helped shape Melbourne were made within the heritage-listed Town Hall. A mix of bluestone and Tasmanian freestone, the classically designed building features a clock tower and fine masonry. To go behind the scenes and visit the grand Council Chambers and stand where the Beatles and Abba waved from the impressive portico, take a Town Hall tour. As well as the Council Chambers, the Town Hall features a large auditorium, which was remodelled following a fire in 1925 and includes panels decorated with sepia figures. The auditorium's Grand Organ has featured in cutting-edge performances by a range of artists including Philip Glass, Paul Grabowski and the Necks. A free lunchtime concert series has been running since 2003, and the Grand Organ Museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the organ and breathe air into its venerable pipes. Join a free Melbourne Town Hall Tour from Monday to Friday with tours departing at 11am and 1pm. Bookings essential.

This National Trust classified building is registered on the heritage register. It is free for tours and the organ and council rooms are very impressive. It is an icon of Melbourne and was built in 1870.

We were staying just around the corner from the Town Hall & as we passed it noticed they did free tours, so we popped in.
The tour guide, Jill, was excellent. She explained the history of Melbourne and took us around various rooms and the auditorium which was beautiful.
Well worth a visit and worth doing before you do any other sightseeing as it explains the layout of Melbourne.
Highly recommended.

Choir of Hope and Inspiration performed here along with other choirs, drum groups and performers including Edie Perfect. A full house, perfect setting, the acoustics really leant themselves to make this a memorable experience. I will be watching to see what else I can go to and enjoy. The organ was fantastic as well. A truly great pre Christmas experience

Annually held from late November to Christmas day, the 10 minutes show goes every 15 minutes between 9 pm - 11 pm. It surely attracts a wide range of audience, from kids to adults. I personally enjoyed the storyline & bright colours of the projection on the wall (3D projection).

We booked a free tour of this impressive building and together with another couple were shown round the various Meeting Rooms culminating in the actual Council Chamber with it's magnificent carved wood and the Large Hall that was being prepared for a major event. We were unaware of the significance of the Giant Organ (the largest in the Southern Hemisphere) and it was a treat to get an up close inspection of it's workings. Two tours are run each week day, 11.00 am and 13.00 pm and booking is essential. We were lucky in that on the day we were there all parts were open which is not always the case. A big thank you to Ken for all his imparted knowledge and time that added greatly to the tour
