Owner description: Completed in 1870, the Melbourne Town Hall is at the heart of the city's cultural and civic activity, hosting theatre, weddings, receptions and exhibitions. So many of the decisions that have helped shape Melbourne were made within the heritage-listed Town Hall. A mix of bluestone and Tasmanian freestone, the classically designed building features a clock tower and fine masonry. To go behind the scenes and visit the grand Council Chambers and stand where the Beatles and Abba waved from the impressive portico, take a Town Hall tour. As well as the Council Chambers, the Town Hall features a large auditorium, which was remodelled following a fire in 1925 and includes panels decorated with sepia figures. The auditorium's Grand Organ has featured in cutting-edge performances by a range of artists including Philip Glass, Paul Grabowski and the Necks. A free lunchtime concert series has been running since 2003, and the Grand Organ Museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the organ and breathe air into its venerable pipes. Join a free Melbourne Town Hall Tour from Monday to Friday with tours departing at 11am and 1pm. Bookings essential.

Love the architecture .... you need TIME to visit these types of buildings. Gather historical information prior to your visit.

We all walk past this building. Many have been to a function here. I recommend you learn more about it's history and have a good look around. The Melbourne Town Hall has tours to show you round. Very interesting and worth a visit. Also the Town Hall has various recitals. I went to one to see the pipe organ played. Its huge and very impressive. You could line up and have a go after the recital!

Apart from being in a nice old building, the seating is staggered so you can see really easily. unless you are right at the front in the far left or right seat. Don't book that one.

A magnificent building that has witnessed and been the location of many great events and has seen some extraordinary changes in Melbourne's history.

I had my wedding ceremony here and everyone at the town hall was wonderful to deal with. We chose the building because of its historical significance in Melbourne and it did not disappoint. Everyone commented on how lovely the room venue was. Just bear in mind that on a hot day there is no air conditioning.
