This is the best hotel I have ever stayed in. It's a small, boutique-y type hotel and all the better for it! Incredible location. Very very attentive and helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble. Excellent chef too! The room had a little kitchen (which I believe is standard throughout) and was super clean and comfortable. There are laundry facilities for guests onsite too, which was very helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and would recommend to absolutely everyone. Only slight downsides were that internet access (both in the dining room / bar and wifi in the room) worked out quite expensive.

Currently our charge for internet is $1.50 per 15 minutes. Capped at $10 per day. Ie if you use 2 hours or more in a day the most you will pay is $10.00. Most hotels in Australia charge approx. $20-30 per day.

We stayed in Feb 2010 with a one year old in a 1 bedroom apartment. The staff are exceptional and very service orientated but in a natural and helpful manner. We enjoyed going down to the small lounge area with our daughter and having a drink before heading back upstairs to have dinner delivered to our room. The lounge has a lovely warm feel - it really feels like your own living room at home! The food was very good too.

There was a relaxation room which I took advantage of and sat in the massage chair for 20 minutes while reading one of their many magazines.

Sadly dinner was not on offer on Sat night which was the only part of the stay which disappointed me. I don't understand why they don't offer it as with a small child we weren't going out so were looking forward to popping downstairs and when we arrived found the drinks and dinner service were not available. There are other eateries close by so it wasn't an issue - just one gap in their otherwise excellent service.

Would definitely stay again.

What a great place to stay!
After reading the reviews I felt positive and hoped the Alto lived up to expectations; it exceeded them! The service is friendly and incredibly helpful; check-in was a breeze with included car parking easy and close by. We stayed in a two bedroom loft which I can highly recommend. Two balconies, air con in both bedrooms and two bathrooms; perfect for a girls night out. The location is superb; right near Etihad Stadium. Breakfast was also impressive with lots of delicious choices and a buffet included in the brekky package. The dining area is cosy but stylish and has a lovely library area with an open fire which would be great in winter. In the room the bed was incredibly comfortable and the decor very contemporary and subtle. The green thing is there but not in your face which I appreciated; how cool to have eco awareness as just a normal part of everyday life! Alto on Bourke is now top of my favourite list when staying in town. A definite winner!

If you are looking for the best value accommodaiton in Melbourne, but not looking for all the 5 star luxuries, then Alto is the place. While the rooms are small, they are exceptionally clean and quite contemporary in their decor. What Alto's rooms lack in space, they make up in their envioronmental friendliness. They tick every green box. Best of all, the double glazing is so effective you hear nothing from outside. Beats more highly rated establishments. The staff at the Alto are just briliant, friendly and helpful. The breakfasts are terrific and the real special treats are the free espresso coffees and book sharing options. See you again.

Room was small but clean and comfortable with a frig, utensils and dishes for a cereal breakfast in the morning. This hotel was listed as a "green hotel" so you don't get plastic bottles of shampoo everything is in dispensers on the wall. Location was near the main train terminal and easy walking to CBD and the tram system is right outside. Would stay here again. Guest self service laundry is available and computer for internet access available for a small fee.

Pleasant hotel in reasonable location. My wife and I stayed at number of hotels while on an extended visit to Australia and this was one of the best - I was pleased wifi was only $10 a day (compared to $27 in many other similar hotels) and that the television was an LCD flat screen with decent channels rather than a clapped-out unit asking you to pay $16 to watch a movie (as was usually the case)
No gym on site as there isn't one on site, but they give you unlimited access to a nearby one for free (not far to go)
