“Friendly service and excellent value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2011

My wife and I stayed at the Alto for just one night on a quick trip over to Melbourne. The hotel is very well located at the western side of downtown - within 10 minutes walking to just about anything. Rooms are small but include all your basic amenities (no tub) including free internet! Not something I would usually get excited about except that it was $25/day in just about every other hotel we stayed at in Australia. Best part about the Alto though was incredibly nice people at the check in desk. We arrived at about 10am and while they didn't have any rooms available for early check in they made sure we got into the first one available (~11am) and had no problem giving us a later check out. They were also incredibly helpful in giving us a map for downtown, talking through all kinds of things to do and making great recommendations based on our interests. Great value for couples wanting to explore downtown.

Unbeatable location - a short walking distance to Southern Cross Station and tram stop across the road. Staff are just lovely and very helpful. Rooms are large and well equipped - loved the shower head! Breakfast was included in the price of our room and on the morning of our stay we were leaving early for a day trip so they kindly sent up a continental breakfast to our room the night before. On our second morning we had breakfast in the dining room and it was excellent and fueled us up for our short walk to the Queen Victoria Markets. We could not recommend this hotel highly enough.

My wife and I shared a 2-bedroom 2-bathroom apartment with loft with friends that were traveling with us. Being able to share the apartment made it a great value.

The apartment floorplan was very efficient, with the bedrooms and one bathroom upstairs and living room, kitchen, and 2nd bathroom downstairs. I would have preferred to have each bathroom adjacent to a bedroom, but this was just a minor inconvenience.

One of the bedrooms has no window other than a small skylight (that can be closed with a switch). This may bother some; others who prefer to sleep late may like that it stays dark.

Service was exceptional. The manager and staff were extremely helpful with recommendations for restaurants and also getting around. They even provided umbrellas to use since it rained during our entire stay. WiFi is available at no extra charge.

The city-center location is fantastic, about a 10-minute block from the free city shuttle. The hotel is in the business district, so there were many restaurants nearby. Breakfast at the hotel restaurant was good; we didn't get a chance to eat dinner there. We made great use of the coffee machine, which seemed to be available all of the time.

My one major complaint was the construction noise nearby that began at 7:00 AM one day and 5:00 AM the next. The noise was impossible to ignore from the bedroom with the window, but our friends could not hear it at all from the other bedroom. Staff told us that the construction was not supposed to begin before 7:00, and they had made complaints to the property owners. If you're planning to stay in the near future, I suggest finding out what the status of this construction is.

Overall we were happy with our stay and recommend Alto Hotel.

Stayed three nights in a studio room for business. Overall very happy, highlights being a spotlessly clean room and very helpful reception staff. Well located a couple of hundred metres from southern cross station where the Skybus from the airport goes to, and the rest of the CBD/Chinatown/Southbank all within easy walking distance. Downside is trams can be heard (and felt) which may be a problem for very light sleepers, but wasn't a problem for me. Breakfast was included in my package and was adequate, with prompt service and a good range of cooked dishes available to order. Other plusses - free wifi, ipod docking and free espresso in the lounge.

On the minus side - rooms and bathrooms could use improvement to have a bit more design flair, e.g. better quality furnishings, desk decorations or flowers etc. might be nice. I appreciate the green credentials (which are more than just tokenism) - but compact fluorescents at the bedside and bedroom were too 'cold' and sickly. Overall, the room felt a little austere, motel-ish and not a great place to linger. However, overall I would recommend this hotel for business and leisure, and am planning to return on trips in future.

Booked this hotel because it was near to my business conference location and reviews of this hotel seems to fare pretty well.

Hotel is a cute little boutique hotel and reception staff were welcoming during the checkin. Liked the idea of the hotel being eco-friendly. Room was on level 1 and it was poorly lit, which is no biggie, until housekeeping came tidy my room. Stayed there for 7 nights and came home one night to find that the housekeeping took the blanket and did not replace it. On another night, housekeeping left one of the pillows on the floor with some sheets.

Went down to the reception to feedback and a staff who was actually off-duty came up to replace the pillow and clean up the mess. He couldn't believe the mess he saw too. I appreciate the warm service some staff members of this hotel provided, but some mistakes are just unacceptable for the price charged for the stay.

Upon checkout, receptionist asked how was the stay, with an awkward expression, seemingly heard about my experience with the housekeeping. No apology or explanation whatsoever offered.

Avoid staying on Level 1 of this hotel because the trams right on hotel door step are really noisy and it totally disrupted my sleep. It was a horrid stay. If it wasn't that the booking was pre-paid, I would have checked out and switch to another hotel. Melbourne has far better hotels than this.

Firstly I wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused. From the description we have not provided our usually high level of housekeeping service as evidenced by the reviews referred to. Simply we did not get it right in this instance.

I wish this review was posted closer to the guests stay 9 months ago so that I follow up with the staff involved in a more direct and timely manner.

Our location in the centre of a busy city has many advantages with most areas of interest within walking distance plus to trams and other transport nearby for slightly further travelling. Being in the middle of a busy city we have designed all room windows to be double glazed, yet be able to open for fresh air. Closing both window panes keeps out most noise of a busy city. Most rooms (92% of our rooms do not face Bourke Street and therefore limited exposure to traffic ).

My wife and I stayed for three nights, Saturday to Tuesday. A little expensive but excellent establishment with an emphasis on the environment and sustainability in a terrific location just minutes from where the airport bus terminates and within comfortable walking distance from the main shopping and entertainment areas of the city. Spotlessy clean and with all necessary facilities. Must also mention the extremely helpful and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Room 213 was a little noisy early morning.

Great small hotel,5mins walk from the main bus and train station. You can get a bus shuttle leaves every 10-15mins from the airport that brings you into the main bus station ($16 one way). The reception staff were very helpful and polite. We decided to have the buffet breakfast for the two days we were there and it was really good.We had a basic double room which was a bit on the small side but lovely and clean.
We asked about free wifi which we had in our room, but there was also 2 computers in the lounge area for anyone to use free. Also while you are in the lounge there is free tea and coffee to help yourself to, as well as in your own room.
There was also washing machines for personal use on the first floor.
Near to the hotel you can catch a free Tram that takes you round the city but it is always packed full of people, but for $7 you can buy a ticket for the day that you can use on the trams, buses and trains within the city. Overall great value for money.
