This hostel is surely a great business for its owners, the downstairs is dominated by a huge bar area (serving food as well) with the smallest kitchen in a hostel you ever did see. Unless you intend to cook at unusual times I wouldn't recommend attempting it here (also v little in the way of pans, cutlery, etc.).
Bar becomes very lively at night, which is great if you just want to crawl upstairs to your bed. I was staying on the upper floors and couldn't hear it.
The hostel is on a very quiet street which is good so you can have the windows open (no a/c) and not be disturbed.
Decent individual shower rooms and toilets which are kept clean.
Queen Victoria Market on the doorstep, so you can eat out on the cheap here which I guess is what most people do.

Good:
Central location - about a 5 - 10 minute walk into the city centre
Room with ensuite
24 hour reception
Bar/cafe on site (although we didn't actually use it ourselves, preferring to get into the heart of Melbourne, there always seemed to be some people in there)

Not so good:
We were charged the rack rate ($120 per night for a king bed with ensuite) even though we had booked at an online special rate of $95/night. First girl we dealt with was very unhelpful and we had to come back the following day, however luckily the second staff member had a bit more sense. Still - frustrating!
The rooms weren't cleaned while we were there, even though the girl who booked us in wrote something in a diary (perhaps we missed something? Who knows).. we were there for 4 nights. There were dots of mould over the bathroom grouting and when we pulled the bed back a bit at the end of our stay to check we hadn't missed anything we discovered beer bottle caps - so who knows when it was last vacuumed.
The lift was broken the entire time we were there so we had to carry our luggage (and ourselves) up three flights of stairs. Not a biggie but still not ideal. The well-worn dish rags holding the doors open suggested to me that this was either a common or a permanent issue..
For us in closing - we are a young couple who wanted cheap reasonable accommodation while we were catching up with friends on a little get-away. I think for what we got $120 isn't cheap at all. I think this would be ideal if you wanted to go get drunk in the bar every night, but wouldn't recommend it for anyone wanting a decent night's sleep.

Myself and five girlfriends stayed in March. Its a really modern nicely set up Hostel. The review below is correct though nobody was interested in going out to see the town they all just hang around the backpackers being homely cooking and all that !! why travel??. We did meet some fun people in the end to go out with but we were by far the most party focused people there. Two of the new zealand female staff are really sarcastic & rude we asked one where the markets where and were greeted with a "HAVE A NICE DAY" really sarcastically. They honestly need to watch their mouths and lighten up a bit. The kitchen is tiny and stinks pretty bad. Apart from all of that its great hostel, not as much of a party hostel but now we know to make our own fun.

Tiny kitchen, not the cleanest hostel. Really cheap for Australia though. Great for those on a tight budget. Stayed on a weekend, didn't seem like many people there really wanted to go out and checkout the nightlife. The bar downstairs (UBar) is kind of lame.

Stayed here for three nights with friends and the staff were very understanding that we had to arrive at 1am - our keys didn't work at first, but they sorted it out without a problem. The room was very light and the facilities modern, only problem was that I never got much sleep due to the squeaky beds and the five boys in our room that made it STINK. Staff were wonderful, helpful and friendly, location was pretty good but felt a little unsafe walking back there late at night. Bathrooms are ample, linen is clean, shame that the rooftop deck closes early-ish because we never got a chance to experience it.
