“Excellent!Loved it!”
Reviewed July 3, 2014 via mobile

Short(but very cold)walk from our accommodation at Knightsbridge Apartments. Into the warmth! Was early on a Thursday and pretty quiet but the food was divine and very fast. Service was spot on,very welcoming and we had our two girls (11 & 13) with us,they loved it too. We had lots of share plates and managed to share a couple of desserts as well. We were so impressed,we took the menu back to our accommodation.

“Terrific tapas”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

Tapas for three. The Tippler and Co....what an excellent choice for a casual drink or three and bar food for a group of friends, or foes even. We loved the relaxed vibe, the friendly staff and the terrific tapas. Lots of tastes to try, cheesy pumpkin arancini, melting winey beef cheeks and mmmm duck pate.....I could drink it all day....and yes, the much maligned cauliflower in a starring role.
Not a restaurant as such, a good old fashioned bar for a rollicking good time, bar stools, heady wine, scrumptious beer and views across The Parade.
The ghosts of Balzac past are raising their glasses.

“Great tapas”
Reviewed June 11, 2014 via mobile

6 friends ate here last week and all chose the 'let us feed you' option which was great value. All courses were nicely presented and very tasty - one highlight being the roasted cauliflower salad which was devoured by my husband (well known as a cauliflower hater). One friend with special diet needs was adequately catered for. Will definitely eat here again when next in Melbourne.

“Expect a bar & you'll be pleased. Expect a restaurant & you'll find it lacking.”
Reviewed June 5, 2014

We stopped here for a meal before the footy at the MCG, mainly choosing this place because it had jumped to number one spot ahead of the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant (which should not be No. 1). We couldn't get a booking at an italian restaurant nearby & were intrigued by the menu at Tippler. First impressions....not great. There's something really disconcerting about having to walk through a bar to get to a dining area, and when we got there, it was a narrow alcove at the rear of the bar, which was pokey and contained the only 2 toilets in the establishment, so the traffic past our table was incessant. The bench seats were uncomfortably upright, but ok for a short stop. The menu was interesting & varied, offering share plates on one side and larger meals on the other. The meat eaters among us ordered the fried pea & ham hock croquettes and duck liver pate , with the vegetarian share plates being pumpkin & cheese arancini and hand cut fat fries. All of these dishes were tasty & we would order them again however the arancini & croquettes were nearly $4 each, which is too much. We also ordered the pan fried gnocci with goats cheese, sweet potato & sage burnt butter & although the dish was nice, it was overpowered by lemon juice which made it much tarter than it should have been. Next time I would ask for it without the lemon, as gnocchi and lemon did not sit well on my palate. There were only 2 dessert options, neither of which were appealing, so we didn't bother. The beer menu was good, although the beer lacked head. Overall we felt a little claustrophobic, as this place is just a hip bar with a few tables squashed down the back, & perhaps should have been designed with a different layout. It's really a tapas bar & not a restaurant, but now that we know that, we would come again but sit in the bar area where service would be better. Give it a try though - we would rate this a 7 out of 10, but it's not worthy of a 4 star rating - which would be 8 or 10, hence our 'average' rating overall.

“Divine!”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

We recently tried The Tippler while visiting Melbourne on our very last night, after seeing it pop up a few times online when researching where to eat out. And we're so pleased we did! We were hard pressed to find better service or food on our trip. We had the beef cheek and the gnocchi - both delicious.
