We had a nice, good sized 2 bedroom apartment, and the apartments are in an excellent position for Southern Cross station, coaches, Skybus and Docklands. The kitchen and bathroom were well presented and but the apartment smelt stale and unclean and the walls were knocked around and badly scuffed. The furniture in the lounge area was filthy and stained and very uncomfortable to sit on, but the beds were fresh and quite comfortable.
We were on the 7th floor, even with earplugs i found the traffic noise is quite bad.

My wife and I live in Tasmania and when travelling on an International Flight from Melbourne always fly to the mainland the day before. We then stay in Melbourne the night before our flight.
This hotel was conveniently close to Spencer Street Station where the Sky Bus leaves for the airport, a 5 to 10 minute walk. Be warned this hotel is not served by the free hotel bus transfer service linked to Sky Bus because of its close proximity to Spencer Street. The double room was very small but very clean and OK for a 1 night stay. I couldn't stay more than 1 night in such a small space. The balcony looked out on a brick wall. As Melbourne prices go it was good value for money, but not for the claustrophobic.

First, it has no view, whether of a harbour or otherwise. So do not expect any sight of the river or dockland area.

Secondly, the room was shabby and the furniture a disgrace, covered in stains.

Thirdly, plainly no time is taken in room clean up; the balcony still had the 'wreckage' of previous guests; empty vodka bottles, bear bottles, etc.

Room Tip: Book somewhere else!

A good quality hotel (not a 4 star rating) close to the markets and shopping area.
Good value and recommended for the short-stay traveller who wants to experience the city of Melbourne.
The free city circle tram is at the front door and the markets and major shops are within walking distances.
The kitchen is a bonus so duck down to the markets and cook up a storm!
We enjoyed our stay.

The downfall of this hotel is that it is rated 4-stars so people come in with fairly high expectations. Realistically, it is a run-down 3-star hotel. Our room was small, dark, and had a tiny balcony facing a concrete wall. We had booked the cheapest possible room online and arrived around noon looking to check in. The room wasn't ready for us, but this is where Harbour View earns it's stripes - the location of the hotel is excellent. We left our luggage at the front desk and walked less than 10min over to the Queen Victoria Market where we had lunch and a leisurely stroll around the shopping stalls. Later, after checking in, we hopped on the free tram (stops right outside the hotel front door) and took it to Federation Square where the action is. On top of that, the Southern Cross Station skybus is a 5min walk away from the hotel, so coming to and from the airport is very easy.

Overall, if you don't care too much about your living conditions (just want your room to be clean) and you value location and/or you plan on spending most of your non-sleeping time outside of the hotel room anyways, then this really isn't that bad of an option in terms of budget hotels. You can also save a few bucks by cooking in the well equipped kitchenettes.

Room Tip: I would recommend paying a little extra for a nicer room - definitely one that is higher up. The ro...

This was a shocking experience from the moment of checking in. When I arrived at 11.30am I was abruptly told that "check-in is not until 2pm. You must go away until then". I was lucky I had a lunch engagement but when I arrived back at 3pm the greeting was not much better.

When I booked I requested a room on a high floor, the room that I was allocated was on the 3rd floor (ground floor is level 1 so that's really 2nd floor). I asked if there was any chance of a room on a higher floor and I was told that "everyone else has checked in so this is all that is left". However, nothing prepared me for the room itself. It resembled a cave - it was dark and gloomy and the balcony faced a brick wall (see my photo).

The airconditioning (heating) took an hour to somewhat warm the room (the airconditioning unit is in urgent need of replacing), the bed had past its "use by" date about 3 years prior as it was hard and lumpy and the "suite" was so small that the lounge was only 1 metre from the television screen. There are no restaurants nearby except the one in the hotel foyer but there were not many people dining there when I stayed. The noise from the trams is not overly appealing and as my room was on the back side of the hotel the noise was a little bit less - I pity the people staying on the front where there could be a "harbour view" (but who would know).

There were a couple of positive things, the room was exceptionally clean and it is close to the train station or bus station where the airport bus arrives and leaves. Other than this I suggest the staff improve "customer service" because.... there isn't any at present and possibly a name change too that best reflects what the majority of rooms really see from the window.

As others have said.... this is not a 4 star hotel and the negative staff who could not have cared less about customers doesn't help.

How can this hotel possibly be rated 4 stars? We booked at short notice for 3 nights based on the hotels location and 4 star rating. Location frankly was the only saving grace for this hotel!
To say the hotel is run down is an understatement.....upon our arrival we were greeted and handled with great efficiency by front of house staff but from there on our experience was terrible.
Once given our room access card for our room on the 3rd floor we entered only to find the airconditioner did not work so asked for a room that did.
Finally moved to our new room on the 5th floor overlooking Latrobe St. When I say overlooking it was more like standing in the middle of La Trobe St as the traffic noise overnight was appalling and never relented from tram, truck and car traffic noise to emergency service vehicle sirens.
The room was tidy but definitely not spotless as a 4 star hotel should be. Dirty tissues left on the floor under desk etc.Gross!
The safe was also not operable and looked like it had been for some time. Robe hooks pulling out of walls in bathroom, dated and worn sofa and dining furniture and patched up walls everywhere with no top coat of paint showed what a hard and long life this poor hotel has had.
If you are at all considering this hotel my suggestion is to look again as there are many better hotels in Melbourne that truly are 4 star rated!

Room Tip: Not recommended at all!
