“If our room was clean, it was perfect stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

My husband and 2year old son and I stayed in Punthill Little Bourke over Easter holiday.

Holiday with kids these days, I need somewhere super convenient, kitchen for emergency snack, bath cos my son is scare of shower ( also I prefer to have bath) and spacious room for him to play a bit.
We have been staying in different hotels in Melbourne but here in Little Bourke st is super convenient. Close to Parliament station, Tram stop, Woolworth, cafes and great Chinese restaurant. It's hard to go out and eat 3meals for 4days with kids so we grabbed basic staff from Woolies or Take away from Chinese and Italian restaurant which was just great! Also close to Melbourne museum is lucky for us, they have a great playground behind the museum so my son had a great time there. The washing machine with 2 packet of washing powder was great help!

Only down side was cleaning issue.
We checked in late afternoon on saturday and I found so many long hairs in the bathroom and a cotton bud under the table and black lamp has dust on them. We paid over $200 for first night and this??? I didn't feel the carpet was clean... I complained to the receptionist and he offered a different room but my son was ready to go to sleep that time and I didn't have any energy left to move our all our stuff to other room. Next day I found out no cleaning service cos of Easter and I didn't realize it by late afternoon. Also the fan in the kitchen wasn't working and freezer dripped the water so fridge was very wet.
But just to let you know last day of our stay, I found finally they cleaned our room properly.

If we didn't have this issues, we liked our stay. My husband and son didn't really care about the cleanliness of room but to me, it is important.

Dear FiFiYoung,
We are so pleased that you enjoyed the location of Punthill Little Bourke; however, disappointed that cleaning standards were not as they should have been.
Whilst we did not as a matter of routine service all apartments on 2 days of the Easter weekend, we did have notification in the lifts and on the front desk that service was 'on request' and we would have been more than happy to provide additional cleaning.
We take these issues extremely seriously and management will check on housekeeping more diligently until they are satisfied that cleaning is really perfect.
We hope to welcome you back to Punthill again in the future.
Kind regards,

This was our first stay in a serviced apartment but we need not have been anxious. These are lovely apartments, very clean, well equipped and very convenientally situated near Chinatown and the posh shopping areas. Pleny of small stores nearby to buy provisions. They were reasonably priced, too.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking Little Bourke Street in Chinatown may be a trifle noisy.

This hotel did live up to expectations. The bed was comfortable. The kitchenette had everything we needed. The washing machine and drier was fabulous. We stayed 4 nights before a cruise. the transport system was great and the location of this hotel was perfect for us. We were on level 2 and had no particular view but the room was laid out well, there was no noise issues. Because of the unusually high temps that week we were really greatful of the aircon and it stayed on even when we left the room which was good. We did use the pool and it is just a lap pool the gym had weights to use and bench press.
The staff were very helpful and responded to requests promptly. The internet free use in the lobby was very good. Overall we would recommend this hotel and we would be booking again.

We stayed recently and were very happy. The location is brilliant being in the middle of Chinatown and surrounded by shops, restaurants and theatres. We walked everywhere but trams are easily found if necessary. The hotel itself was quiet even though we stayed during the Grand Prix when the hotel was full. Unlike a previous reviewer we weren't disturbed at all.
Our room was on the 3rd floor and was perfect for what we wanted. It was clean, comfortable and modern. There was a queen size bed and a divan and in the same room was a kitchenette. We didn't really use it much but it had what we needed. Some other rooms are probably bigger and grander.
The only small annoyances were that the bathroom floor does get wet when showering as the glass screen is inadequate and the towels were thin so the bath mat was unable to dry the floor before becoming soaked. Also when I rang reception one time, the cord came away from the phone and I was unable to reconnect it. Although reported, it was not repaired during my stay.
I would not hesitate to stay there again.

My wife and I have just returned from one night at the Punthill Apartments in Little Bourke Street and we were both quite disappointed with what we got for our money.
I realise we had to pay a premium due to the Melbourne Grand Prix being on but I can't say we received value for money even at a lesser rate.
First the good, the service received from the lady at reception was without fault. She fully explained everything I needed to know in regards to our stay including late night entry, car parking, etc.
The location is great. Right in the heart of Chinatown, with so many great restaurants right outside the front door.
The room itself was fine, especially as we were only staying the one night. The only faults with the room itself were that the couch was so sagged in the middle of the seat, once in it was an effort to get out, a bit of mould under the taps over the bath and that the shower was over the bath with only a very small shower screen which really didn't stop the floor from becoming quite wet. Other than that the room served our purpose for the night with the bed quite comfortable.
The main down side of our stay was the noise.
I'm not concerned with street noise, as this is to be expected when staying in the heart of any city. It was more the noise from other people staying in the apartments. There seemed to be a constant chorus of voices, door banging and even the lift which must have been on the other side of our bedroom wall.
I concede the hotel was probably booked out due to the Grand Prix and as such a lot more people coming and going than normal, but given that we paid $345 for the one night we didn't feel it was value for money.
Would I stay there again, given the amount of other accommodation options available, probably not.

Dear Brian G,
Thanks for your comments regarding Punthill Little Bourke.
As you mentioned, the F1 Grand Prix is an extremely busy time in Melbourne with many local and international guests descending on the city for this annual event, thus influencing the room rates during this time. Unfortunately many Grand Prix guests can be rather excited and rowdy and we do apologise.
We are pleased to know that you found the service so welcoming. The property is also currently undergoing a soft refurbishment and items including couches, carpets, curtains are being replaced.
We do hope to welcome you back to Punthill in the future.
Kind regards,

Hubby and I have stayed here a few times, but really felt the service this time was slipping, especially from housekeeping.
The location of the hotel is fantastic, just a few steps and you are in China town. The pool is lovely to cool off in, and there is also a small gym.
We stayed in a one bedroom spa apartment. Check in was easy, we dealt with a lovely man from New Zealand.
We went up to our room, and I was disappointed to notice that the cooktop was covered in what looked like toast crumbs (subsequent servicing of the room didn't get them cleaned, and they were still there when we left). There was also something sticky and hard splattered in the sink. Upon closer inspection it looked like instant coffee granules had been spilt in the sink, then been left to dry. I gave the sink a light scrubbing and the marks came off. If that was the first thing we noticed when we walked in, I'm not really sure how housekeeping missed it. We also noticed the spa and shower area were not cleaned properly after we had used them.
The shaving cream dispenser was empty and stayed empty.
I understand that we could have rung reception and asked for these things to be fixed, but I really don't believe we should have to.
Just after we checked in, someone knocked on the door, and before waiting for an answer let herself in, and proceeded straight to the bathroom, telling my husband "I'm just going to check the shampoo levels". She didn't ask if it was a convenient time, and my husband found it a bit rude and abrupt.
The room itself was nice, very roomy, good aircon, and sliding doors so you could close the bedroom off.
Upon checkout, we went downstairs and told the lady we were checking out, she barely even looked up at us and only said "that's fine there is nothing owing". She didn't ask how our stay was, wish us a safe journey, or even say goodbye.
Would we return? At this stage I would say maybe, as the room and location were quite good.

Dear sebthunda,
We are really disappointed at the contents of your review and we take the issues you mention extremely seriously.
Of course you should not have to ask for a perfectly clean apartment and of course staff should knock and wait for an answer before entering cautiously and politely.
We would love you to contact our General Manager on 03 9916 8877 as we need to find out more information about exactly when you stayed. The matters you encountered are out of character for the property and staff and we need to investigate how this occurred.
We are grateful that your concerns have been brought to our attention.
Kind regards,
