Owner description: Melbourne Central is a diverse shopping and dining destination that invites you to keep exploring. Bringing together more than 300 retailers over five levels, Melbourne Central is home to an absorbing range of Australian and international fashion brands from Gorman, Alannah Hill, Crumpler to Vans and Nique. Take a sugar break at Cupcake Central, a beauty break at Mecca Maxima or an indulgent time-out at Self Centred Medi Spa. The buzz continues after dark, whether you are lurking in Knox Lane with its graffiti by Melbourne's infamous DABS and MYLA, or basking beneath a screen in the Hoyts Lux Cinema. Spanning two city blocks, the centre boasts several unique architectural features including the giant Marionette Watch hanging in Shot Tower Square, famous for its hourly rendition of the Australian anthem 'Waltzing Matilda'. The square is named after the historic Coops Shot Tower a bullet-making facility built in 1889. Today, the brick shot tower stands proudly in its original place, protected by a modern twist: the magnificent Glass Cone, designed in the '80s by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. While it floods the centre with natural light, the Glass Cone's design also makes it one of Melbourne's most recognisable landmarks. Located atop the City Loop Melbourne Central train station and can be found on the iconic free city circle tram route. Melbourne Central boasts 822 car parks making it the perfect base for Melbourne city excursions. The five-star-rated parents' retreat offers a sanctuary for families, while The Little Library free book exchange provide spaces for pause and escape from the city's frenetic buzz. Whatever brings you to Melbourne, be it shopping, exploring, lunch, brunch or simply an unexpected adventure, it is all waiting between Lonsdale and La Trobe. Or to go behind the scenes book a place on Melbourne Central's Unlocked Tour which leads visitors around hidden nooks, rarely-seen vantage points and secret rooftops. Bernadette Alibrando can also tell you the tales of Melbourne Central's huge range of artworks in the Walk to Art Tours. For bookings please visit the Melbourne Central website.

“These are two separate places”

Melbourne central is just a shopping centre adjacent to Central Station. It's no more or less interesting than any other shopping centre really.

Bourke St Mall is NOT part of Melbourne Central ( don't know who linked the two together on this site). It's famous for the two major stores, Myer and David Jones, and in particular, for the Christmas window display at Myers. Lots of buskers in Bourke St Mall, and access to several of Melbourne's arcade, such as the lovely old Royal Arcade, with it's famous clock with Gog and Magog who strike on the hour. IF you go in Royal Arcade, treat yourself to coffee or chocolate at the chocolate shop.

“So what? It's a city.”

The Mall itself is interesting when you have to dodge the trams, but it is all looking tired. Some of the arcades off the Mall are interesting as well as some of the buskers. But, it is just the CBD. Big yawn.

“Great place to hang out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2012

I have been to Melbourne many times but this was my family's 1st visit to the Bourke St mall and Mellbourne Central. We loved the festive atmosphere created by the colourful Christmas decorations and the quirky street performers, including a mock stone Santa :) There was the usual long queue to see the Myers Christmas windows, which were lovely as always. I also loved watching the cockatoos of the Melbourne Central fob watch singing the waltzing matilda on the hour. The shot tower against the high glass dome of the Melbourne Central mall was impressive as always.

Never go to Melbourne with visiting either one and both when I have the time. This is why I love going to Melbourne, the range of shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and entertainment. You never run out of things to see and do!!.

“Shopping Around The Clock Tower”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 6, 2012

My main intention of going here was to seek at the iconic clock tower and huge impressive glass dome. Enjoyed wandering around the shopping mall and seeing what goodies was to be had. Had a nice breakfast in the Pancake Parlour. We then watched the Christmas themed decorations do their thing under the Seiko fob watch.
