I was excited by the fabulous fresh produce and competitive prices. Whilst this isn't the kind of market that is overly useful for a tourist, I still thoroughly enjoyed walking the aisles and picking up the odd item here and there to eat back at my hotel room. The coffee shop in the back corner is well worth a visit.

The Prahran market is one of Melbourne's 'gem' in terms of fresh produce market. You can buy a large variety of top quality produce here.
For visitors, a Saturday morning visit is recommended as it's more lively.
After visiting the market, you can go for a stroll on Chapel Street.

As a tourist destination, this place might as well be avoided. It mostly caters for people who live locally and is a bog standard market place full of fresh meat, food, veg, etc.

If you are a local, by all means go and enjoy it, for a market it is pretty vast and has a lot of selection, but it is just a fresh food market.

Prahran market is a piligrimage for me and my husband. Not only to shop but to leisurely have a coffee, browse around for speciality food and stuff which one won't find in regular suberb supermarket. For example, there is special store that stock all kinds of mushrooms, another one specialize in potatoes, another one have all kinds of eggs. The colourful flower stalls are a feast to the eyes.
My favourite is Theo and sons seafood which a must for me to stop for a dozen of Melbourne's best oysters. Best for being fresh and reasonably priced.
Another recommendation is the Sweet Greek shop which has the yummiest Baklava.
Outside the market, there is also the Japanese provision store which has all kinds of goodies from Japan.
All in all, an absolute must of all foodies so not to miss an enjoyable experience.

Anyone who enjoys cooing or is a food enthusiast would enjoy a walk around this wonderful food market. Great place to stock up on snacks for your hotel room. We picked up some sea urchin and oysters for an interesting seafood snack. Fun!
