The city tram is a great way to get a feel for the city. Get on and off to visit places around the journey.Try to avoid the peak times at the start and end of the working day. The commentary given was quite difficult to hear, but locate yourself near the conductor so you can hear or ask questions about what you're passing.

I take my hat off to this company or whoever's kept these historical trams going and whoever's keeping them maintained and going. More power, may the trams keep going.

Hotels & the tourist info centre at Federation Square (next to the Flinders Street Station) will have the compact size (longer than a postcard) map which serves as a handy map to Central Melb as well. Also observed tram drivers making time to tell passengers about particular stops for particular sights.

The trams also support one of the children's hospitals with collection tubes near the driver's cabins.

Hop on, do the circuit, enjoy.

NB:
* be aware of steep step up from or down to stop
* you can get on/off from both doors (some buses in some countries have an IN through front door, OUT the back kinda thing)
* hang on to something if you have to stand in case of sudden moves/jolts, etc. They remind you anyway, but easy to think that a gentle ol' tram will just shuffle along. Beware of ageist assumptions <tongue very firmly in cheek>

This tram becomes far far too overcrowded with locals and tourists using it as free transport only. I saw people miss their stop because they couldn't fight their way through the crowd from the back of the carriage to get out of the door quick enough. Do not rely on this tram for sight-seeing.

The City Circle Tram is a good way of getting about to many of the main attractions of Melbourne. It runs approx ever 1/2 hour and is free. One can hop on and off as you choose. It runs both in a clockwise and an anti-clockwise direction and worth waiting for should you be unlucky enough not to be able to get on the first one that comes by.There is commentary provided.
Unfortunately it may pose some difficulties for a disabled or elderly person to get up and down the rather high steps.

As a resident of Melbourne I often use this tram when going about the city and also pick up travel brochures on the latest attractions and shows to visit in Melbourne. Highly recommended
