The old rattler circles the city and you can get off and on and often as you please. There is always another tram coming so you never have to wait long. The commentary along the way gives you some interesting information.

This is a fantastic facility, the old red trams run around the grid of the city clockwise and anticlockwise every 12 mins with a running commentary on the history of whatever area you are in. It's a great way of orientating the new visitor to Melbourne. Couple this with the free tour bus, a single decker that follows the same route and offers the same hop on, hop off facility as the paid for tourist bus and the tourist volunteers on every corner and you have the impression that Melbourne welcomes and values tourists and visitors.

The trams are great to see as they go by and their interiors are well worth checking out too. There's plenty of places where you can see old trams in museums so it's nice to see them in their correct place on the roads and serving the public. The fact the ride is free is an added bonus of course. It is true that it just goes around the CBD but you can get into the centre quite easily from the trams as the walk is not that bad and gives you a chance to look around on foot as well.

Great little freebie to get around Melbourne in. Look out for the bergundy coloured tram but dont be fooled, it can change colours at times due to replacement trams. Make sure you get on fast and sit down fast and please, help the elderly and mothers with children. It gets pretty packed at times but a great way to get around, just to get your bearings, like I did, for first timers to Melbourne.

Free and an excellent means of getting about. The tram allows you to get your bearings if you've never been before and to organise future days in Melbourne.
