Owner description: The Royal Exhibition Building is one of the world's oldest remaining exhibition pavilions. On 1 July 2004, it became the first building in Australia to achieve a World Heritage listing. Located in Carlton Gardens, the pavilion was originally completed in 1880 for the first of two international fairs hosted by Melbourne. On May 1st, 1901, the initial Commonwealth Parliament was held here, an event commemorated in 2001, the centenary of Australian Federation. Today, with its meticulously restored interior, expansive galleries and soaring dome, the Great Hall offers an impressive setting for trade shows, fairs and cultural and community events.

“Treasure of Melbourne”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

If you can get inside here it is absolutely stunning! However it is worth looking outside especially if you're already visiting the museum. The gardens surrounding are quite lovely, make sure you walk around the front of this building as that's the nicest spot

“Beautiful from inside to outside”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

Even just to see it from the outside set amongst the gardens is a worthwhile endeavour but if there is an exhibition on it is fantastic to see the detail inside - there are tours available too apparently.

“Great exhibition venue”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

Very spacious and impressive venue for an exhibition. Even though there was a large crowd, it didn't feel too crowded and was pleasant to walk through.

“I love its history”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

Imagine Australia hosting a world fair. Yet we did even before we were a country. The exhibition buildings are just magnificent - they may not have the spire of the Eiffel Tower but they are a heck of a lot more functional and they look magnificent now that they have been restored. The paint work is brilliant and the balance of the achitectural design shows real skill. I love it.

This is very old and they still do exhibitions there. Take some time out to look at the ceiling it is adorned with the most magnifecent art work.
