I stayed here for one night on what is my first trip to Australia. It was booked based on cost and location near the sea and it is only a 15 minute walk to the beach.

The room was ok for the one night although it is basic. This hotel is a bit strange as it is really two hotels, the Mercure and a Pullman which share the same facilities so although the room was cheap there is a nice pool and small gym.

The restaurant was good for breakfast but I didn't eat there in the evening. I did have a beer at the bar and the barman Andy was great.

The main issue I had was the extra costs everywhere. Internet wasn't free, there was no bottled water free in the room. You could have a bottle but it was $10. I just came away feeling the price had been set low but the cost made up elsewhere.

This is one of the hotels next to my office in Melbourne so I'm a regular visitor. Once you get over the strange layout (2 hotels in 1), it's not a bad place to stay. Bear in mind that it is targeted at the business market rather than holiday-makers. This means that the location is good for the many surrounding office blocks and you may be overwhelmed by the crowds staying there for the many conventions that they host.

While the immediate vicinity is a bit of a wasteland for food and beverage options, it's a very short cab ride to St Kilda, South Melbourne and the Chapel street where you'll find plenty of options. The in-house restaurant is expensive but the food isn't too bad, though it can be hit and miss (on my last visit two of our steaks were perfect, two were very over-done and one was blue).

The service is generally excellent, it can be a bit inattentive in the restaurant sometimes, but I can't fault it otherwise. Last visit, the young man tending the bar was absolutely delightful and the staff in the cafe are always great.

A special mention: the pastries (danishes, croissants, etc) are baked fresh in-house every day and are outstanding. I love grabbing a good coffee and pastry for breakfast from the cafe rather than braving the crowds for the buffet breakfast.

The whole hotel has recently been refurbished so the rooms and common areas are modern, well-fitted out and clean, if somewhat average.

The gym and pool are not great and it's a bit disappointing for such a large hotel - hopefully they are next on the list for refurbishment...

From the cheery welcome from the concierge to the friendly housekeeping staff, our stay at the Mercure was most enjoyable. The foyer area was beautiful. The pool and gym areas were clean, and the rooms were very spacious. The bed was one of the most comfortable I think I have ever slept in. The only draw back was that there really wasn't much around the area in the way of restaurants and cafes, so we had to hop on a tram (which was no drama) and go to Chapel Street, St Kilda or the City. But that is really a minor gripe. Most enjoyable.

Room Tip: We didn't have a room overlooking the Lake, however, we also got a very good price, so we weren...
