Matt, our tour guide, was very knowledgable and enthusiastic about Melbourne and its rich History. Matt in the bright green t-shirt was very welcoming when we met outside the State Library.
Topics covered included the Early Settlers,Gold Rush, Ned Kelly, prominent Melbourne landmarks, street names and their origins, graffiti laneways and popular shopping arcades.
Our 3 older children coped quite well with the tour, however our 3 younger children struggled. It was a big-gish group of approx 30 people - majority from overseas and no other families.
A lot of walking and only little snippets of information at each stop.
It would be awesome if there could be an extra session especially for families in the future.
It would have also been fantastic if more of Melbourne's attractions & exhibitions were mentioned.
ie: Melbourne Tourist Information Centre at Fed Square, Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, Art Gallery, Docklands, ACMI, Old Melbourne Gaol, Sea Life Aquarium, Botanic Gardens, Cooks Cottage etc.
OR perhaps that was deliberate so as not to Information Overload the group?
All in all I think it was a great tour, Matt was very accommodating and answered questions when they were asked.
Well worth a tip! Not really polite to give nothing - the tour went for 2 hours. My favourite part was learning about the legal and illegal graffiti!
Perhaps if you have a family with young children it would be a good idea for one parent to take the older children on the tour - the other parent could play with the younger children at the State Library in the children's section...
DEFINATELY worth it to get an overview of the city when you arrive in Melbourne....
