This review is based on 15+ visits as I love MBD. The coffee is always absolutely spot on with a couple of roasts to try each visit. And although the food is mostly vegan (which I'm not) I don't miss out on anything.

The bircher is the best I've tasted, the pancakes with maple and ice cream are delicious, the mushrooms on toast are decadent and the smashed avo is an epic serve of avo and feta. I keep intending to try the specials but I can't get past the breakfast menu.

Only complaint is that it's so popular you always wait for a table on the weekend. But it is the only place I will queue for a table because its worth the wait.

We booked a sitting at this Vegetarian restaurant (the owners nominate it as a 'Specialist Coffee and Tea House serving sustainable and healing food made from scratch') on Friday night. They do daily breakfast and lunch and only on a Friday are dinners served. Bookings are essential. Two sittings are served - at 630 and 8pm. There were queues of folk lined up as we left following the first sitting. No alcohol is served but one can choose items like lemongrass and ginger tea and fruit smoothies. The food was interesting with great taste combinations - sweet chili and mango, macadamia nuts, pickled cucumber. Roasted Kumera with sweet dips. Saffron rice and spinach with Southern India spices. All very tasty but the portions are huge - maybe best ordered for a group to share rather than individual dishes. Sweets were generous - the crème brulee is a challenge - huge in amount and quirky taste given the crème and ice cream are all made from a vegan base. The decor is interesting. One squats on limited bench space, which you can share with fellow diners, or sit on small, hard, wooden (and very uncomfortable) peasant type stools. My wife had been there at another time for lunch and felt lunches were better than the evening offerings.
Overall an interesting dining experience - were one to embrace the vegan style of cuisine, it would be a fine venue.
If you have not already perceived I am a meat lover but I must admit Monk does serve very tasty and innovative vegetarian/vegan food and is to be commended for its style, creativity and quality.
