This attraction is well advertised on the City Circle Tram and is always worth a visit. It is free and there is no pressure to buy opals. Lightning Ridge the town is also worth a visit

“Worth the trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2014 via mobile

We happened upon this while in Melbourne and glad we did. The owner is usually there on Saturdays and Sundays, but we got lucky as he was there the Friday we were. He tells you the history of mining, demonstrates shaping and polishing opals and teaches you about the different value levels and what to look for. If I go back to Melbourne I will definitely make trip back to see him.

“Very informative, well worth the visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

My husband and I visited here about 2 weeks ago. Very easy to find in the Melbourne CBD. Very informative and hand on type display. The owner was very welcoming and has many opals on display in various forms. It was great to see how they are cleaned etc. Nice range of jewellery and opals (as stones) on sale. Owner shows genuine interest and is very knowledgable and helpful. We really wish we had been at an actual mine! I can highly recommend a visit here.
