I booked Victoria Hall, and later saw the bad reviews on this site while trying to book another city. As someone with a microbiology background, I came prepared with disinfection supplies. They were clearly not needed. The room was very clean. The place was clearly renovated, apparently leaving the front office for last.
Compared to the dives I used to stay in Europe, this was a palace. With the slowest internet I've ever seen.

Stayed at the newly renovated rooms. The rooms are clean and comfortable equipped with a wardrobe, a study desk, a flat screen TV and a full length mirror. Don't expect any breathtaking view though. The common bathrooms are tolerable. Problem is some people don't clean up after themselves leaving the bathroom rather messed up.

Victoria Hall is well located being just across the Melbourne Goal, one road away from Lygon Street, two roads away from Carlton Gardens, several blocks away from Queen Victoria Market, and on the other end of Russell St is the Federation Square. All within comfortable walking distance.

In short, this is a good place to stay for the low budget tourist who doesn't spend too much time in the room.

My friend was the one who has booked the room at Victoria Hall for us and two friends for a weekend in Melbourne. Because I was paying $20 per night i did not expect anything more than just a basic room, but I never expected what it would really be like. It goes well beyond getting what you pay for.

The rooms were really filthy; stained dirty carpets and even walls; absolutely disguisting toilets and showers, with water puddles on the floor with hair, toilet paper and god knows what floating in there. The whole place had this mouldy dark feel, where you wouldn't want your skin to come into contact with any surfaces.

Location of Victoria Hall is good, but everything else is definately not.

As a final punch, about a week after coming back from Melbourne, me and 2 friends from the trip have developed a weird itchy rash all over our bodies. I first thought it was an allergy. I went to the doctor, who, after examining my rash, asked me if I had recently stayed at any grubby places. Victoria Hall came to mind straight away. Doctor's diagnosis of the rash? Scabies. They can be transferred from dirty bedding.

Please stay away from Victoria Hall!!!

If I had seen my room before paying I would not have stayed here at all. Unfortunately you pay on arrival before you see anything. If I hadn't paid upfront I would have left pretty well immediately, as it was I had to bear it for 4 days due to a no refund policy. Hot, noisy, filthy, no hot water, bathrooms made you feel dirtier after having the shower. OK its cheap but for what they provide it should be free or less!

Whatever you do, do not stay at Victoria Hall. You would only stay there if you are on Skid Row or you are thinking about suicide and need a place to depress you enough to make that final decision on killing yourself.
It is absolutely filthy, the showers were full of old pubic hair and the room was so hot we could hardly breathe in there. We were booked in for 2 nights but ran away the next morning to a lovely place called The Greenhouse on Flinders Lane....for the same price!

The whole place felt like an abandoned office building, everything was grey and very depressing. Stained carpets, mouldy bathroom, and the room was so basic- bed, desk, wardrobe (not even a mirror). The only pluses was that it was spacious, well located and felt secure. I only could stand one night there, the next night I moved to a different hostel which was cheaper and much nicer.

The room we stayed in was yuck. Filth on the floor. The floors had not been vacummed - noted ecpecially when we moved a single bed. Another bed has someones undies left behind. Carpets torn, stained and dirty. Don't walk around without something on your feet.
Kitchenette very tiny & dirty - other residents took your food and milk
Asked in the morning for the 2 toilets on our floor to be replenished with toilet paper - this was not done till the next day. (Hello all day without toilet paper)
The tv room - dirty, dark and all funrinshing torn or broken
Finally we had to pay for our accommodation up front. We needed to leave one day early and was not entitled to a refund of this day. "It's our policy" this policy was not stated anywhere, especially on arrival.

The only thing this accommodation has for it is location. Close to the city
