“Cheap, great location, but still under construction”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2011

We booked a private room for 5 nights. 4th floor, room 12. Good size, wardrobe and small desk with a queen bed. Pillows are soft but thick (which I don't like) but bed is comfortable. No road noise, but you can hear people in the hallway at night opening and closing their doors.
Room could do with a few hooks on the walls on which to hang wet towels as you can't leave towels in the shared bathrooms. Aircon is cold, and we had to ask for an extra blanket which was not a problem.
Shared bathrooms are fine, but can get busy at peak times (ie. 6-8pm). Depending on other guests, the bathrooms can be a little messy (ie. Water on floors from shower and toilet paper scraps on the floor). I haven't sat on the toilet seats unless necessary! But the water is hot and the showers are private so it's fine. Recommend you bring a pair of thongs to wear in the shower for personal hygiene.
Some parts of the hotel are still under construction (hotel entry, footpath, elaborate kitchen, games room and roof top area) but safe to access. Over the 4 floors there is: movie space, workout space and small kitchen which are great ideas and will be fabulous once they are finished.
Location is fantastic. You are a short distance from main streets in Melbourne and about 15 minutes stroll to Flinders St station and the Yarra. 5 minutes walk to Lygon St, 2 minutes to the free City Circle tram (maroon and runs every 12 minutes in both directions) and a short tram ride or 10 minute stroll to the Queen Victoria Markets.

We paid $80/night for the private room and that's great value considering how close you are to everything. A great option for couples wanting something cheap without staying somewhere old and crappy.
I am really pleased with our stay, but a few little things which are being finalized will make the hotel much better. Will definately stay here again on our next visit to Melbourne

I'll admit my first impressions weren't great. I arrived at 1am, and the taxi driver was worried about dropping me off because the place looked like a building site (I was aware they were doing some renovations) there were 8 young lads standing outside drinking and being loud and generally annoying. The service at reception was excellent and I was soon checked in and the young lads threatened with eviction unless they disappeared.
The room I stayed in was a semi-private 4 person dorm (which on booking I thought was female only but was just me and 3 men) - this I should add is not the sort of room I would normally book but as it was Grand Prix weekend, this was about the only room left within budget. They do offer single rooms here as well.
The room was spacious, towels and bedding provided, large lockers for your luggage (but take a padlock and key), plugs and lights on dimmer switches next to your bed and the bed itself was extremely comfortable. The facilities including the showers and toilets were clean and the showers powerful. There is also a good mix of facilities a gym, kitchen and movie room.
The air con on the first night pumped out hot air and once reported to the very helpful reception staff was fixed.
This is a great place to stay for the those on a budget that are 25+ years old as there is a quiet policy after 10pm and most people are asleep by 1030.
Be much nicer once the renovations are complete.

I stayed at the space with some friends for my birthday. I managed to book 2 rooms, 4 beds in each room for 8 people for just under $270. I received a very good deal considering it's location. As I arrived I was expecting average but was quite surprised. Although, the receptionist wasn't as informative as to where the lifts were for the rooms, we all enjoyed ourselves as we hit the town that night. At the time of our stay the hotel was being refurbished, and we were a bit hesitant to use the lifts. One of the rooms booked had an ensuite but the other had a shared bathroom for the guests to share on that floor, we were pretty satisfied and recommend you all to stay especially for a night.

we checked in for a couple of nights as we are on travels across aus at the moment. melbourne was the first point of stop. the staff were fab and very friendly and helpful! rowan / rohan was particularly helpful! sorry if spelt your name wrong dude! the girls at the desk were also helpful. internet is good connection - $10 for 24 hours - picked up the connection on like the 4/5th floor so this was cool. the staff were informative and helpful at all times. we ended up extending our stay. location is ace its central to everywhere really and access to pub transport on the doorstep pretty much. rooms were clean aswell. we were in a double with a bunk though as it was bit cheaper than a double bed. rooms were clean and you can request more cleaning if needed at the reception area. as its not right in the city but just by the city its fab if you want a quiet hostel. would defo recommend! communcal kitchen too and this was clean - there is a fridge so you can shop and pop your things in the fridge too instead of eating out every night.

We stayed at Space Hotel for 3 nights in March 11. We booked through Wotif and at no stage during the booking procedure were we advised that the site was undergoing construction. We arrived to an unsecure entrance, basically just a hole in the wall, with communication and electrical wires hanging from the ceiling and a make-shift ramp going up to the rooms. The noise from the construction started at 7am every morning and the rooms obviously have no sound-proofing.
Even construction aside, the room was not clean when we arrived. There were belongings from the previous occupants underneath furniture so obviously a thorough clean was not undertaken. The airconditioning could not be turned off, and it was broken so the temperature could not be changed and blew freezing cold air into the room 24/7. On top of this our bedding consisted of a set of sheets and one incredibly thin blanket, making for very uncomfortable, very cold nights.
The rooms were much much smaller than they appear in pictures on the website. There was barely even walking room between the bed and the walls.
The locking mechanism in the door to our room was broken and half falling off, we actually had to remove part of it to ensure that it would not stick and we would not be able to get in/out of our room.
All in all the state of this hotel was an absolute disgrace. I would never stay there again and strongly suggest that you consider other options. And do not let pictures on the website fool you. I guarantee the room we stayed in was in no way comparable to the pictures of the same room type offered on the website.

Space Hotel is an absolutely amazing hostel. Although it is still in the process of being built, they have opened it up already since large parts are already finished. The whole place is brand new, incredibly clean, and perfectly geared up for backpackers. The beds are comfy, the rooms have a/c and towels, and the showers are great (and there are plenty of them too!). The real selling point of this hostel is the communal areas for backpackers - if you're planning on staying in Melbourne for a few days, this place is perfect. They have a huge "Movie Room" with a cinema-size screen, and movie theatre chairs, and a whole bank of dvds. You can also watch sport on the big screen. The Game Room is in the process of being built, and the gym is completed and is pretty flashy! Staff were v helpful and knowledgeable.

The downsides of the hostel are a) its location - it's a fair walk from Southern Cross station which feels like a long time with a backpack. However, it's only about 5-10 mins walk from stop 4/5 of the free tourist shuttle. And b) no free wifi! It's available for about $6/hour though.

We stayed at the Space Hotel for a few days at the end of Feb 2011. The website had warned us to expect building work and noise between 7am and 4pm but we are early risers so weren't put off.

We stayed in a private double room which was very nice. It was a reasonable size for a budget hotel with a large wardrobe, desk, chair and double bed. The bed was very comfortable and there were nice touches - a full length mirror, flatscreen TV, tea and coffee provided - that I hadn't been expecting. I agree with another reviewer that it would have been nice to be able to turn off the A/C. We shared the bathroom facilties which were cleaned regularly. The showers were a good size and there was plenty of hot water and good water pressure. We didn't use any of the other facilities due to the renovations but I understand that there will be a lounge/ gamesroom and full kitchen when the hotel is complete.

All in all I thought it was excellent budget accomodation and would like to stay there again once the building work has been finished.
