“Clean, central and value for money”
Reviewed July 11, 2008

We contacted this place to enquire about reservations and the email response and online booking was quick and efficient. We paid 125 AU$ a night (June 08).

The room itself was large spacious and clean. We were located on the eight floor which has good views of the Melbourne skyline. I think the lower rooms do not have much of a view. The basic kitchen facilities comprise a fridge, kettle, toaster, microwave and sink/worktop area. Though basic, they really do have significant advantages over a standard hotel room.

A continental breakfast (comprising cereal and toast and OJ) is included and placed in your fridge for you to eat at your leisure each morning. Double glazed windows keep external noise to a minimum. Bathroom was clean with a powerful shower. A minor niggle is that the shower head is fixed to the wall, and this may annoy some people.

On the negative side, rooms close to the lift (rooms ending with 01 e.g. rooms 701 on floor 7, 801 on floor 8 etc) are likely to experience significant noise from the aging lift/elevator infrastructure. Ask for a room away from the lifts. The manager said to us that the lifts were due for an upgrade but didn't seem optimistic that this would be happening any time soon.

Overall the staff are efficient and friendly, and the location in the heart of Chinatown is perfect for anyone looking for a large room in central Melbourne.

City Limits is on the same street at China Town and 2 minutes walk from Parliament Train Station and the Tram. The room was large with the standard amenities, including continental breakfast daily. The staff were friendly and the rooms were cleaned well each day. The main complaint was the noise from the lift so bring some earplugs but the comfy beds will help you sleep right through the noise. The shower head didn't provide a good shower and the small hairdryer is useless but apart from these things, we really enjoyed our stay at City Limits and Melbourne is a great place, with heaps to do. For the price, City Limits is well recommended.

  • Liked — The location, the size of the rooms and the comfy beds
  • Disliked — The noisy lift which was very loud in the room (bring your earplugs), the showerhead and hairdryer

This place was aesthetically pleasing, clean and simple. I would recommend anyone staying there. The owner was there right when we got there and she was so personal! The rooms were also very clean and getting on the internet was no problem. I would recommend thi place to anyone!

I was 1 of a group of 20 who stayed at this little motel and we had no complaints from our group which has to be a good recommendation. The staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms were clean. It is centrally located to the theatre and eats places and to the City Circle tram line which gets you around for free. Would recommend to friends and stay there again.

  • Liked — Close proximity to everywhere we wanted to go
  • Disliked — Limited space for large groups to gather for "happy hour" or such

Incredibly clean, the cleanest room I've ever stayed in. Staff were very helpful and complimentary breakfast in the room was excellent. Right around the corner from the theatre and close to the free city loop tram. I will stay here again for sure!

City Limits is located in a very narrow street in Chinatown, walking distance from the city. The room we had was on level 2, with a queen and single bed, kitchenette, bathroom etc. It was convenient, clean, comfortable, spacious - certainly not top class accommodation, but good value for money, nonetheless and the staff were friendly. Use of internet ($2 for 20mins) in the lounge area was appreciated, as was the breakfast left in our fridge daily. We stayed 3 nights. The first night was exhausting, due to extreme noise levels outside - garbage trucks, street cleaners, drunk revellers - and a relentlessly shrieking burglar alarm going off across the road from 12.30am until almost 2am. Staff were considerate enough to discuss changing rooms, but we decided to brave it for the other 2 nights (turned out not so noisy). Shower water temperature varies every 3 seconds from freezing to scalding, but the bathroom was well maintained and they even had shampoo and conditioner dispensers, and fairly fluffy towels. I would stay here again.

As I booked last minute during a major convention, all that was left within my budget was the ominously named City Limits Motel. If only it was outside the City Limits, it would never have come to my attention, and I would have been saved the embarrassment of having this on my credit card statement! When I was dropped off, first impressions were pretty rock bottom. But then I went to my room, and I realised something below rock bottom existed. Dark, dingy and dirty spring to mind automatically. I didn't think places like this existed anymore! My recommendation would be to stay next door at the Somerset on Gordon Place - just a dollar or two more, but in a different league altogether. To sum up City Limits (or Nutbush as my colleagues have oh so cleverly renamed it!) it is the sort of place that you look both ways before entering/exiting, just in case someone sees you going in/out!
