Nomads All Nations Hostel
Ranked #82 of 157 Specialty Lodging in Melbourne
Reviewed July 1, 2007

Us ( 3 girls) made the mistake by staying at All Nations. At least we only booked for 1 night.

The Staff is very friendly and the All Nations bar is good.

Everything else was shocking. I have stayed in other hostels before so I wasn't expecting a 5 star hotel.

The floor we stayed at stank with oil paint ( I don't know what had been painted as nothing looked like it had fresh paint on it).

The room itself wasn't too bad though. Would have been nice to have a chair or a table in there though to put your things on.
The mattresses on the beds were the worst mattresses I've ever slept on. The springs were coming out of them. It was terrible.

I know this is not really the hostels's fault but the noice from the trains outside were really loud. You could also hear the traffic lights all night long.

Some of the toilets were really filthy. They stank from urine and I don't think they had ever been cleaned. I didn't dare to have a shower in there. Wouldn't risk my life for that.

Didn't use the kitchen either so not sure how that was like.

We paid $105 for the 3 of us in one room.
We could have paid the same or less for a room in a hotel in Melbourne.

Definately not staying there again and I will not recommend this place at all.

I travelled the entire Australia in late 2005, driving one loop of the main island. Hence, i can say that i've stayed in many backpackers across the country. All Nations ranked 2nd worse in my entire 60 days trip.

We were initially staying in Exford Hostel somewhere near Chinatown. The room was ok, but we were tired of climbing the long stairs. So since we still had 3 more days, we changed to All Nations.

The staff were friendly. There's no doubt in this. The free beer were also for real. However, the others were bad, even by backpackers standard

- Room was not tidied up since the last occupancy

- Room small is ok. But the bed's spring was popping out and making it painful to sleep in.

- Toilet were really filthy! I saw vomitus and cigarrattes on floor. The bathing area were also disgusting-looking with cockcroaches crawling about. The worse thing was that the toilet was shared by male and female alike. No sense of security.

- The place was just beside a train line. I'm not referring to the type of quiet train we see in most cities. This train i'm talking abt is the really noisy type. The windows would actually vibrate everytime the train zoomed past.

- The kitchen was overcrowded. No chance of cooking.

I will not recommend this place at all.

Some other info - we paid AU$50 for a double room. Some pictures is available here if you're interested. Otherwise, pls skip.

With many good/great hostels around there, I made the mistake of staying at All Nations. I was lured there by the free gym but didn’t even get to use it. Here are the reason why it’s so bad:
•Filthy: pools of stains of all sizes were everywhere, in all rooms. The beds are infested with microbes. As soon as I get in bed I felt tingling and bites. Soon I got rash marks. I had to sleep in extra clothing to protect myself. Spoke to another traveler in another room and she had the same experience about infested bed.
•Rooms were dark and gloomy that were painted with dark blue and red paint, and with single incandescent light hanging from ceiling. I got a single room facing the street and the noise was incredible. Needless to say I only get a few hours of sleep at night. Made a reservation to exchange room in the morning, but next day it was giving to someone else because the night shift didn’t inform the day shift of the reservation!
•Free gym? Sort of. I was giving old weekend gym pass. The gym was closed on weekend! If you're just over for the weekend like I was, then it's useless.

I packed up and left right away on Monday. Found two hostels with the Friendly Backpacker Group just few blocks away that are light years nicer.

Just a perfect place in the city centre. Such a big city but full of friendly faces. Paid only $17 AUD for a night and received free membership to local gym, free beer in the bar next door and free breakfast. I was booked originaly for 2 nights but just left today and loved it. Thanks guys....Lola

This must be the best located hostel in Melbourne by far. Free tram at the door, free beer on arrival, free breakfast every morning and free gym... and all that for $17 per night (did I mention free linen as well?)
Look, it is not the cleanest, newest and the rest but myself and my 2 friends had a fantastic time meeting all international backpackers in the bar next door.
I did not like the $30 key deposit especially after not finding my key at the check out time and free bus to the airport is only twice a day so for my 3pm flight back to Sydney I had to pay $15 for a SkyBus.
All in all ....We are coming back!...
