Perfect location for those who want or need to be in the city. The hotel is serviced by the Skybus which made our arrival and departure really easy.

On check-in my partner and I were really underwhelmed with the welcome. We were basically ignored by one lady, and then checked in by another guy. No "hello" or "welcome" what so ever, it was just "do you have a booking?" and "what name is that under?"

We got to our room and it was OK. Nothing wrong with it, but it didn't really wow us, and it certainly didn't feel homely. We didn't use the cooking facilities, but they seemed more than adequate. The room served its purpose for the stay.

Our room was overlooking the street. There was some noise from the street, and in particular the trams in the mornings, but this didn't bother us and it certainly wasn't loud enough to wake us up.

The only reason I would stay in this hotel again would be because of its location. Across the street is a 24 hr 7/11, which is where you can buy your daily metcards, snackfoods etc.

Checkout was a much better experience than check-in. We had a different guy, can't remember his name, but he was really nice and helpful in organising our transfers to the airport. Overall though, the service was let down by the initial experience upon check-in. First impressions last.

It was fantastic for the location. Extremely central.

Stayed in a one bedroom and it was really spacious for me. I was surprised by the space and thought that it was good value for money as have paid a lot more for smaller service apartment in Melbourne.

Interestingly, i had a polite notice from the management telling me to keep the curtains drawn during the day as I was wasting the air conditioning. Slightly surprised by this statement, have no idea quite what to make out of it!

There was a carpet stain which was there before I arrived - did not notice it until the cleaners were attempting to come in to clean it. They were very polite as realise that I was in the room and knocked to ask when would be a convinent time to come back to fis it.

I have to say that i have not noticed the staff not being friendly however I do tend to talk at people.

My girlfriend and I just returned from our 6 night stay at Somerset on Elizabeth. We were in Melbourne for a getaway before returning to uni, and found that the hotel offers many pro's and con's in equal measure.

PRO'S:

Location - on the corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale. Cannot get any more central. For us it was perfect, as we enjoy shopping, visiting museums, and going to bars, cafes and restaurants. Trams are at the front door, and you can buy metcards across the road. 2 min. walk to Bourke St mall. Never more than a 5 min. walk from amazing restaurants and bars. Some may complain about late night noise, but honestly it was never a problem. If you want to stay in the heart of the CBD, you will get minimal noise wherever you stay. If this turns you off, stay in the suburbs!

Room Size - We stayed in a 1 bedroom deluxe. The bedroom can be separated by sliding doors and a curtain, otherwise it is fairly open-plan. It is not large by any means, but is not small either. We found it a great size. If you are spending alot of time in your room, maybe you'll want something a little larger. Bathroom was quite big with a large shower and counter-space to display toiletries/make-up. Very impressive.

Kitchen - I cook alot, and was very happy to find such a well-equipped kitchenette. Medium sized fridge, dishwasher, stover with 2 gas hotplates (much better than electric!), microwave/oven (wouldnt cook a roast in it but perfect for everyday cooking) and plenty of pantry space. All utensils and crockery provided, as well as toaster, kettle and tea/coffee sachets. The kitchen is the rooms best feature.

TV - Large (37inch?) LCD. Includes a few foxtel channels such as 3 Fox Sports channels :), National Geographic, and Fox 8 as well as all the free-to-air channels. Poor selection of in-room movies, however there is a DVD player, so just hire some or visit JB Hi-Fi across the road!

Bed - Very comfortable Queen bed. Great pillows (can choose to your liking) and excellent linen. The couch and chair are also very nice.

Cleaning service - Was done every day except Sunday. Replaces towels, changed sheets, cleaned kitchen and generally cleaned up our mess! Cleaning and maintainence staff were all lovely and very friendly.

Birthday Wishes! - Its a very small thing, but a card and chocolates were waiting in our room when we arrived, and again when we checked out. Very thoughtful.

CON'S:

Staff - Were horrible. No other words to describe them. All front desk staff (with the exception of a staff member named Chaminda) had such a lack of people skills and common decency that they left us astonished. The female on check-in appeared arrogant, unfriendly, and came across like she couldnt be bothered. No 'how was your flight', no 'what are your plans in Melbourne', not even a 'hi, how are you?'. Not once did I see a staff member smile (Chaminda was an exception). Three times I called reception from our room with various requests and twice my call went unanswered. This is unacceptable. They also have poor local knowledge - we asked one day where the closest video rental store was and were sent on a 15 minute walk, only to find the place closed a year ago! These people are working in the hospitality industry, yet posess zero people and communication skills. We couldnt believe how average they were. Worst thing about the hotel by far.

Climate Control - or lack thereof! There is a note next to the climate control unit on the wall which says the room is permanently set at 21 degrees. To change just press the arrows up or down. There is no display showing what the temperature is on, and no way to tell if you are making the room cooler or warmer, just two buttons with arrows. Very frustrating. We had to call reception every time we wanted the temp changed to tell them what we wanted the room set to.

Dust around air-con vents in roof - Looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months. Alot of build-up. I suffer from asthma and this didn't help at all. But to the cleaning staff's credit, once we alerted them to the problem it was fixed within the hour.

Shower tap is very touchy - small issue, but it gave me [--]! A 1mm movement in either direction changed the water from boiling to almost cold. Takes alot of patience and control to find the right temperature! Once you get it right though, the water pressure is great.

Ironing board was cheap and thin - another small issue, but again it annoyed us!

I hope this review is of some help to people thinking of staying. We would not hesitate to stay again. The price is good (around $150 p/n) for a decent sized apartment in the best location in Melbourne. Just let management know if the staff are as bad to you as they were to us!

This apartment-style hotel was adequate, although nothing particularly stuck in my mind as being outstanding.

It is a good location, being a short walk to Melbourne Central (underground) railway station in one direction, north, and the centre of the CBD (the former GPO and the Bourke Street Mall with Myer and David Jones) in a southerly direction.

My wife and I stayed at Somerset On Elizabeth with another couple for 4 nights. We all stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment. The apartment was very spacious with 2 good size bedrooms (1 with ensuite) and a seperate bathroom. Although we did not use the kitchen area, it had all the essentials. The rooms were very clean and well maintained. The service was first class, every request we had was dealt with promptly and efficiently. The location is superb, close to the heart of the city and the Bourke Street mall. The only downside was noise from Elizabeth Street. Our room was at the front of the hotel looking directly onto Elizabeth Street and the tram noise may be a nuisance to some people. I would recommend this hotel to all.

Stopped one night here, arriving 10 pm leaving 9 am, so not much of a sample. This was however my third stay here and room etc was consistent with the previous stays.

Location is very good, Elizabeth street just near Bourke street which is about as central Melbourne as you can get.

One bedroom superior apartment is spacious and well appointed and new with everything working. A proper apartment with dining room, bedroom, bathroom.

Shower has an inadequate screen and it seems impossible to avoid creating a lake when having a shower.

$18 pp extra for a very basic continental breakfast in the small breakfast room not worth it, various cafes close by will provide better value. Cappucino fresh from a push button machine with predictably ordinary quality. Also felt a bit strange as I was the only person in the room when the apartments were quite busy.

Room access using a swipe key in the lift as well as the room, which was a bit annoying when the key failed after breakfast and I had to go to reception to have key programmed to get back to my room.

Not sure if the value is particularly good when standard hotel website rates are quoting $250-300, many less expensive, but less opulent, options about. But if you don't mind paying you will get a very nice unit which is convenient as it gets.
