“A little tired, but ok overall - as long as you don't want breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

I've just returned home after three nights here on a work trip. I was able to take advantage of the 'stay 3 nights, pay for 2' offer, so value was great.

As plenty of others have mentioned, the whole place is a little tired. Externally, the signage isn't great, so it can be hard to spot from the street.

Check in was quick and easy, so no complaints there.

The room was fine, if a little dated. Being there to work though, I really didn't spend a lot of time in it, so not a big deal. The bed wasn't all that flash - it definitely felt old. But I was tired enough that sleep wasn't a big drama - even though I was on the 4th floor facing Elizabeth Street, I didn't notice the noise that others have mentioned.

Breakfast was a different matter though. Perhaps my expectations were out of whack, but it's the only place I've ever stayed where it was continental only. I'd chosen to add three breakfasts to my booking when I made it, assuming the $15/breakfast price was a cheaper offer for booking ahead - no mention of it being continental only at that time either. I have to say though, that when I checked out I was only charged the one that I did have, so it seems that choosing the breakfast extra is a bit of a waste of time, given it's the same price in the hotel.

Probably the best way to describe it is that the breakfast room, and the choices available in it, are about as tired as the rest of the hotel. Filter coffee only, a domestic coffee machine that does black coffee only, and juice jugs that only had enough juice for a couple of cups, despite being the only person in the place...it was all a bit sad.

We stayed at the hotel one full week. Actually Somerset is Service Apartment so everything is simple. The bed room decoration is simple but the size is enough about 48 sqm.
They provide from freezer, microwave, stove, dishwasher and washing machine. It was perfect for us. They clean the room everyday but it is a bit late afternoon.
The location is perfect. You can use fitness center, whirl pool at 4th floor for free.
I would recommend for traveler who goes with family. I would absolutely go back there if I visit Melbourne. The rate is reasonable.

Room Tip: Room no 717 is perfect but do not take 1020 coz the shape of the room is not nice

We stayed here for the weekend and were very well looked after. We had a great apartment, spacious and roomy with absolutely everything we could wish for. It has a pretty central location and the spa was a real treat after a day of Melbourne tourism. We got a late checkout without a problem and overall had a great time. There is building work going on next door and this started about 7am - so no lie in!!

Hello Swishytail

Thank you for your feedback. I am happy to hear that you were very well looked after and that the apartment was everything that you had hoped for. The construction taking place in the mall below us has been somewhat of a nuisance, although it is unfortunately beyond our control. Completion of the Strand Arcade redevelopment is due for completion in February 2014 however I've been advised that the worst of the jack hammering is now over.

We look forward to welcoming you back next time you are in Melbourne.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

We were able to pick up a winter deal of the hotels website for 3 nights for the price of 2. Stayed in a 1 bedroom deluxe and we were pleasantly surprised with value for money. Clean, superb location in the city, great customer service (24 hr reception) and decent room size. We took advantage of the room service company which was fantastic, well priced, quick and beautiful food. Would come back. Only problem would be the street noise as we were on level 8 and faced onto Elizabeth St, a room at the back would probably be better (we live in the country) but small price to pay for the location!

we have recently stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 adults and 3 kids it had everything we needed to make our stay less stressful considering we had 2 year old twins everything you need to make a meal in the kitchen oven, microwave even a dishwasher, the dvd player was handy for the little ones to watch their dvd. 2 bathrooms was so handy to have, it had a jet pool, spa gym breakfast room for a fee but we didnt use it. perfect location,All staff was so friendly nothing was a hassle for them. Apartment was clean the only thing it would of been handy to have a couple of extra towels for the little ones And there is building works happening around the hotel we was on the 8th floor and we didnt hear a sound only when we had the window open a bit. Definitely would stay here again

The Somerset is well located in the city centre and you can walk or catch free tram or visitor bus a short walk from apartment. The front desk staff were always on duty, friendly and helpful. Room clean and tidy, although slightly dated. Gym, sauna and spa pool available. Unfortunately the outdoor area adjacent to the pool (indoor and on 4th floor) seems to be the smoking location for guests and smoke drifts through. Kitchen facilities good and making breakfast/lunch easy. Guest controlled aircon.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

I booked a one-bedroom apartment at Somerset on Elizabeth for a girls' weekend in Melbourne. We were in town to see a couple of shows and exhibitions at the gallery.

The apartment was larger than I expected for such a central location. And it relly is central - a block from the mall, and a very short walk to the Queen Victoria Markets or Flinders Street Station (in the other direction). This part of Elizabeth street is wide, well-lit, well serviced by taxis, and very close to a tram station.

The Good: large rooms, very friendly staff (everyone was extremely helpful and competent), easy to find, central location, great shower with strong water pressure (we were on level 5), comfy king sized bed and really good pillows. Kitchenette and dining table were plenty big enough for 2 people. Large bathroom with laundry.

The not so good: Part of the building is being renovated, which resulted in construction noise (most noticibly sanding and jack-hammering) during most of the day and into the early evening. Luckily we were out and about most times, and only stopped in the room for a quick break or to change shoes or drop of shopping, but the noise would be quite a nuisence if you were in the room for any length of time Monday to Saturday. The noise was considerably louder near the lifts - perhaps request a room at the end of the floor, away from the lifts for a more peaceful stay. There are also a number of homeless people who seem to live in an alcove of the next building. Homelessness is an issue in most large cities - I only mention it for single female travellers who may be uncomfortable or intimidated when returning to the hotel alone late at night.

Overall, we had a good stay and would stay again. The staff really made our stay more enjoyable and were very helpful. Large, bright rooms, comfy beds, witih some construction noise during the day.

Room Tip: Rooms further from the lift shaft should be quieter during renovations
