“Budget friendly & Clean”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2011

Although the room was quite small it was spotless and comfortable. Have stayed a few times and is my first choice for budget friendly accomodation in the city. The bed was comfortable and surrounding noise was minimal.

Let's be clear, this is not the worst hotel in the world. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was what you expect at an Ibis: clean, fairly comfortable bed, not enormous, but OK. The location near Southern Cross station is convenient, but like many inner city areas it is a bit dodgy (I was accosted by tramps twice on they way to the hotel) and the Melbourne transport system is so good that travelling around is not really a problem anyway. On the fourth floor I wasn't disturbed by the bar nearby, but I was woken up a few times around 5am by what sounding like garbage trucks outside. Oh yes, and they have a coin-operated laundry, which is helpful if you are staying more than a day or two.

The downsides for me were the cost of internet connections and the breakfast. For some reason they don't publicise the fact that they use an external internet provider who charges 55 cents a minute for wifi (or wired) connection in your room. The cheaper coin-operated public terminals in the hotel were better value at 10 minutes per dollar, but deadly slow and unreliable. You may soon be seeking out internet cafes in the neighbourhood (the ground floor of Bourke Place, on the corner of Bourke and King saved me, but it is not accessible at weekends). The second problem was the breakfast: at $20 for an all-you can eat buffet, it didn't seem good enough value to me. There really should be a lower-rate continental breakfast option. Also, at busy times, they ran out of food, cutlery and crockery (everything has to be carried up the stairs from the floor below by the long-suffering but ever-smiling staff). So, it wasn't a hotel that suited me and I'll be trying somewhere else next time I come to Melbourne.

Dear LonleyProf

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience. It is please to hear that you found many aspects of the hotel to your liking.

The hotel has 2 types of internet connection offering which are supplied by outside providers. Many parts of the world these days are able to offer hotel guests free WiFi internet connection that unfortunately is cost prohibitive for us at the moment with the service provders available within Australia. The current applicable charge for the use of intenet in ythe privacy of your hotel room is 55cents per minute to a maximium of $27.50 per 24 hour period based on each electronic devise. We are constantly looking at ways with providers to minimise this cost.

Appreciate that the hotel did not suit your needs but thank you for your praise of the staff these comments have been passed onto them.
We wish you all the best with your travels.

many thanks
Mary Ellen O'Malley

Overall very good and provided expected value for money. Initial shock on entering room as far as size goes (looked larger on website), felt claustrophobic and raced down to ask if there were any larger rooms (there aren't) so returned to room and found that got quickly used to the size, by the next morning it just felt cosy and pleasant. Probably wouldn't bother most people but I like plenty of space! Very clean and tidy, staff very courteous and efficient, no complaints there. The shower was one of the best we've had in hotels, fully-wholed shower-head as opposed to ones with a big gap in the middle! Room overlooked road-sweepers' yard so have requested better view for room on our return to Ibis on our way home shortly.

Dear Accor Traveller

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience at the hotel.
The hotel rooms are compact and accommodating of 2 people in either a double or twin room.
We are limited in being able to offer spacious rooms. Located in the heart of Melbourne's CBD
surrounded by tall city buildings ensures the hotel is central to the many features our city has to offer, views from the rooms is however one of the limited features.

We welcome the opportunitiy to be of assistance to you in the near future.

Kind regards
Mary Ellen O'Malley

Very tidy and clean. Real value for money. Its location within walking distance of Southern Cross Station was great as I had a morning bus to catch to the airport. The staff at the front desk were efficient and helpful.
