Description: Named after the red paper lanterns that hang outside traditional Japanese izakaya's, Akachochin is an elegant and modern Tokyo-style bar. Head Chef Kengo Hiromatsu combines quality ingredients and japanese tradition to present a menu with a focus on true japanese cuisine presented in a modern way. Akachochin's specialty sake range showcases the best Japan has to offer and if requested, can be matched to a variety of regional dishes to suit your palate. Akachochin's dining room is elegant and when seated at either the marble laden sushi bar or a private table overlooking the water, you will be sure to have your tastebuds looked after at Melbourne's most unique and authentic japanese restaurant.

“High Quality and good service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2013

I needed a quick lunch in between meetings whilst in Melbourne and walk straight out of the Hilton Southwharf into the delightful Japanese Restaurant. I sat at the Sushi bar and had a plate of really fresh Sashimi consisting of Tuna, Salmon, Prawns and Scallops and followed it up with some Sushi of Crab and also Sea Urchin, all washed down with a couple of glasses of Saki, of which they have a great range.

“Food is ok, but....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2013

We were really looking forward to Akachochin being big fans of Japanese food. Overall, fairly disappointing. The restaurant itself is lovely and the location is nice.

Generally the food was pretty good although the flavours were not superb and the prices are quite steep. However, the biggest let-down for us was that when we ordered a salad, there was a live bug crawling in it! Certainly, they took it away and replaced it fairly quickly but we still had to pay for it. As a suggestion to restaurant owners - if you provide us with this kind of experience, at least don't make us pay for it.

“Delicious Japanese at South Wharf”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2012

This would be one of the best Japanese restaurants that I have eaten at. Innovative dishes designed to share, really inviting and friendly service, and a great drinks list made this a night to remember.

“What a way to spend a spring day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

Decided to try out Melbourne's newest food precinct down at South Wharf.

Akachochin was our destination and it was most enjoyable. A modern izakaya style Japanese restaurant, it came highly recommended from The Good Food Guide. The place was buzzing at lunchtime on a sunny Saturday. We'd made a booking which was just as well, although everyone else seemed to have walked in off the street, we would have struggled to get a seat at the time we arrived. you can sit at marble topped table or have a seat at the sushi bar.

The welcome from the waitstaff was warm and efficient. Menus produced and orders taken very quickly. the food arrived snappily, and it was delicious! We had 5 shared plates and a dessert each.

Pick of the bunch was the Maguro tataki - 6 pieces of seared tuna, w/ chives and chilli and a ponzu jelly and anchovy dressing. Amazing flavours and the tuna just melted. The Sansai Age Dashi Tofu had silken tofu in a yummy sauce with beautiful little mushrooms in it.

My dessert of Tofu Cheese Mousse w/Umeshu & Pear Compote sounded weird but was really delicious. The winner though was the Sweet Potato Brulee, a lovely delicate brulee with a crispy top.

We will definately return!

“Tapas Japanese style”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

This Japanese restaurant at South Wharf was the surprise packet of our recent trip to Melbourne. Food was great, staff friendly and efficient and we really enjoyed their approach of only serving lots of small Japanese inspired plates. This will be a regular for me when I visit Melbourne and price was great as well.
