“Great Views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2011

This is a good size hostel in North Melbourne - the area is close to the cbd but feels like the suburbs
It is a short walk to the Vic Markets - bit longer to the CBD but well serviced by nearby tram lines
The staff were friendly but seemed a bit tried ( it is a busy week with the tennis on ) The hostel is clean & tidy, the kitchen seems a bit small & they could use some more power points in the main lounge area for laptops etc.
The global gossip wireless is fine on the first floor & roof top but useless in my room on the second floor.
The great thing about this hostel is the roof top area - you can sit inside or out & just enjoy the 360 degree view.

This was my first time in a YHA hostel - I decided to stay there because of unpleasant experiences in other backpackers hostels. The rationale is: I am going for the first time to this city, and if I cannot find a budget accommodation with excellent reviews I will stay in a well known hostel chain.

It was certainly a good choice. The place is reasonably clean (efficient cleaning staff but it gets dirty at times because of so many people using the -excellent - facilities). I stayed in a 4 female dorm and was a bit annoyed by the messy people sharing with me but this is something that one expects when sharing dorms, especially after sharing for 6 nights as I did.

Staff is great, very friendly and helpful apart from an elder (moody) lady who often stays at the tours office - avoid her if you can. I needed her assistance a couple of times and she was surprisingly rude.

Location is fine, close to the city centre. I walked there everyday but I am a good walker - it takes about 20 mins but there are trams nearby too.

Generally a good experience, better than other hostels in the city, but you surely pay more for that.

During our Melbourne Trip, we stayed in YHA metro for two nights. But we felt, we should have spent more days in this YHA! On 1st day while asking the directions to strangers on street, in addition to direction they also praised a lot about this YHA. YHA metro is enough close to CBD, but away from the chaos of CBD. We used to walk back or take tram & then walk a little from CBD. The Melbourne Skyline view from rooftop was amazing! The facilities like lockers, kitchen, internet are perfect (because of time limit, couldn't use any more than this). Vicinity of Victoria Market was very enjoyable; we shopped very tempting fresh food from there & cooked our most memorable dinner in Australia, in YHA Metro’s kitchen. The room was cozy, comfortable, relaxing & perfect for two of us. Provided herbal toiletries were of very good quality. We enjoyed watching a small, old fashioned TV! Heaters were working well & bed was cozy, we had very good sleep. The best part about this YHA is eco friendliness. Everybody around in YHA was friendly & helping. While leaving, we could quickly reach train station & then airport. I would recommend this YHA for all travelers. We had very lovely stay here, look forward to staying there again!

In comparison to private hostels YHA in general is good value. Less beds in a dorm than in private hostels. Much cleaner than private hostels, and everything is well organized.
The kitchen though is too small for such a big hostel.

I stayed here in a twin/double/triple room with no ensuite for 2 nights.

Positives
- Clean
- Friendly staff, 24 hour reception
- Cheap!
- Affordable dinner and breakfast at their cafe
- Pretty quiet for a hostel - only noise I heard from our room was a tour bus picking people up in the morning and smokers talking outside.

Negatives
- None to speak of really. There are however closer places to stay in the city. That said, you can walk to the city and there are several tram stops close by.

I would stay here again.

For the dorms this may be ok value for money, the private room is simply aweful. Go to Ibis hotel or similar for decent quality at around the same price. The only good thing about this place is the helpful reception staff (although you often have to queue). My compaints:

1. private room has no facilities that one would normally get in a hotel, just a metal desk, desk lamp and lockers, no tap/boiler/nothing. The room basically looks like a depressing poor-mans prison cell. The fact that my room had no view to speak of didn't help.

2. awefully slow Internet. Some pages take 5 minutes to load. Used Internet in many hotels & hostels around the world and this was the slowest by far. Also, wireless isn't available in most rooms so you have to go downstairs or the roof.

3. Forget sleeping in from jetlag. Can still be quite noisy at 2 am with people banging doors going to the bathroom and no good sound insulation. Loud intercom wakes you up starting at 9 am and goes on at regular intervals. If not the intercoms it is 'room service' waking you up. This consists of emptying the trash bin and providing bed linens every few days, Although I don't really care about this but it reflects poor service - my room hasn't been cleaned for days. When I was sleeping in one morning the 'cleaning person' kept insisting to come in - I said come back later as they had just woken me up. Person pleads to come in anyway, I repeat no please come back later. Then to my utter surprise the person unlocks my room door and comes in anyways - just incredible! The indecency! And just to empty the trash, as mentioned I've seen no evidence of cleaning in the days I was there. Otherwise the place is pretty clean.

4. Facility wise nothing special or additional. On contrast it lacks a water boiler or readily available hot water, and free tea/coffee which some hostels/backpackers have (instead you have to buy it at relatively expensive rate). So I don't understand the 'good facilities' mentioned by other reviewers.

5. Location was convenient for me, but it's a bit far from the center compared to other places. So for tourist purposes there's lots of places which are much better located . The relatively high price for a hostel doesn't seem justified considering location, facilities, etc.
