We stayed one night to see a show at the Crown. We stayed in an ensuite twin room. It was basically what you'd expect for $86 just a heartbeat out of Melbourne. Although the beds were comfy, the covers didn't look clean and had a couple of hairs on it. Just a note, the room doesn't have a fridge in it, and watch out for the high power flushing on the toilet.

Also, check out the rooftop. Has a great view, also has a BBQ and an enclosed area for those rainy Melbourne days.

I stayed here recently and I liked it. I stayed in a twin room. The room had twin beds with real mattresses and real box springs. Also the room had a TV and tea/coffee making facilities. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable and there are a lot of facilities on site. This hostel is located slightly outside of the main business district, about 10 minute walk to the start of the business district and 20 minute walk to the center. I stayed in several hostels in various cities during my recent visit to Australia and I liked this one the best. If you are looking for a good hostel this is for you.

The last time I was at the Queensberry Hill Youth Hostel, a group of musicians were having an impromptu session on the front steps. A lovely long Melbourne evening, the sun slanting goldwise off the stone of the old building opposite and lighting up the tower of the North Melbourne Town Hall down the street. A mellow moment that has stayed in my memory.

The ground floor has all the action. Here is the front desk, a team plugged into the affairs of the hostel, the suburb, the city and the wider world beyond. If they didn't have the information at their fingertips, they could get it for you very quickly.

Another desk handled travel and tours, and beyond that were the common rooms, cheerful and comfortable with everything the weary traveller needed. A small bistro with a great breakfast, supper and everything in between; Internet cafe, kitchen, dining room and rows of chairs to just lounge about and take in the talk. All clean, tidy and comfortable.

The kitchen is large enough to ensure that there is no waiting except at the busiest of mealtimes. Fridges are big and supplied with labels and pens to mark food, and of course there is a "free food" area to leave your oddments when you move on. Loads of crockeryand cutlery, sinks and stoves are plentiful and the tables in the dining room many and roomy.

The floors above are all similar. A square corridor with bedrooms facing out, and amenities on the inside. Possibly the best bathrooms I've seen in a YHA in Australia. TV and reading rooms on each floor, lifts and stairs.

The rooms themselves are spartan but comfortable, which is the way I like them. I've slept well every night I've been there, which is more than i can say for many places costing several times as much.

On the roof is a huge barbecue area with a view out over the city.
Great for al fresco lunches or parties extending into the night. And downstais in the basement is the car parking - a little tight, probably best to arrive early, but parking is plentiful in the street outside if you aren't planning to be around during business hours - and the laundries and locker room.

If the hostel doesn't have everything you need, there are shops a few minutes walk away in North Melbourne, some of them staying open very long hours indeed, plus a hotel or two and trams into the city.

Melbourne City is maybe half an hour's walk, though the hostel will gladly lend bikes to make it quicker, but it is a very interesting walk, with the City markets abustle, the green of Flagstaff gardens and any number of delightful terrace houses along the way. The area just oozes charm, and the specialty shops in the old Market buildings repay explorers - sweets, toys, novelties, great fun!

All in all, it's my preferred place to stay in Melbourne. Cheap and cheerful, clean and comfortable.
