“Nice place to stay”
Reviewed May 14, 2012

YHA Metro is a nice place to stay in Melbourne.
Nice & clean, secure and friendly staff.
Close to VIC market & CBD.

Could be a bit cheaper due to numerous other good hostels in Melbourne.

I had an excellent stay. Friendly staff, happy travellers. Mixed age group here. Its not a party hostel but I did find it social. I think the price is standard for a city in Australia. It was a purpose built building as a hostel and functions very well.

Pros:
- Good lounge area and rooftop patio with beautiful sunset view
- big kitchen, lots of fridges and shelves
- big bathroom
- all areas were kept very clean
- wine and cheese social night
- windows in rooms open for fresh air

Cons:
- doors to rooms do make a bit of noise when closing

As with many things in Australia, this hostel was far too dear for what it was worth.
I paid $32 for a night in an 8-bed (all-female) dorm room. There were constant comings and goings during the night with the result that I got little sleep. It was the worst hostel experience I've had in a good while. The location is hardly central, and I did not find this hostel at all good value for money.

If you must stay there, and if you can, pay the extra money to stay in a dorm with fewer share-mates.

Room Tip: Recommended paying extra for a 4-bed dorm

The YHA is as the most YHA's very clean and safe. The staff at reception was very nice, also the night manager. Kitchen is a bit small, but it's okay. You can order breakfast. Prices are not very backpacker-friendly.

The location of the YHA is perfect. It's a bit out of the city, but just 10 minute walk to the CBD. So it's very quiet to get a good sleep, unless someone is snoring :D

Very nice rooftop and a chill-lounge.

This hostel lives up to the YHA standards, everything is simple but clean and tidy. The best thing about it is the location, it's just out of the city so it's not noisy and parking for a bus is not too difficult. I was travelling with a group and found the staff to be very accommodating of our needs. Meals were very good. Noise is a big issue, especially on the weekends, some people coming home late at night made a lot of noise and it travelled right across the floor. As they do have a lot of school groups staying here, it would be nice to have some security or staff members walking around the floors at night as there were are few people being a little over friendly to some of the younger children.

Good standard hostel, only 10 mins walk from central station or 2 minute walk from the nearest tram. Admittedly not in the hub of everything but a very social hostel with big kitchen/dining area and lovely roof terrace.
8 bed dorms are pokey - feel for the cleaning staff having to find the carpets to hoover. 4 beds are lovely - much more airy and if your budget can stretch to it, would definitely recommend them.
Staff on the whole friendly, although guilty at times of having too much fun amongst themselves rather than paying attention to the guests.
Would recommend to older travellers/families who want to be out of the action but near public transport links etc.

Room Tip: 4 bed rather than 8 bed every day of the week!!!
