Reasonable hotel in good location with adequate accomodation.Laundry facilities were available but not all were working. No room safes but safe deposit boxes at reception for no charge, however small boxes were long and thin and would not accomodate an Ipad and larger boxes were very big. You get a key for the box but only after the box is taken away so you have no idea who has access to your box or even if there is a lock put on it (not very satisfactory) no bar and restaurant only did breakfast, so if you wanted something to snack on you were forced to use a vending machine. Personnaly I would not go back there.

Dear Mick231,

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Travelodge Southbank.

We appreciate the time you have taken to provide us with your comments. I have addressed your concerns with the relevant departments to improve our overall guest experience.

With regard to the safety deposit boxes available from reception, these deposit boxes are located directly behind reception where access is restricted to hotel staff only. The boxes work on a dual key system where the guest receives one key and the other key is held by the Hotel Duty Manager. The boxes can only be opened with both keys, making it impossible for anyone to access the box without the guest key. Access to each box also requires the signature of the hotel guest and the hotel team member as another security feature. As you mentioned, we do have two sizes of boxes and between the two sizes, most items of value can be accommodated.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at the hotel.

Warm Regards,

Ben Lancken

Southbank is a very popular area with lots of restaurants and bars and good walks by the river. The town centre is just across the river. So an excellent location for the hotel.

Rooms are a good size but basic. Staff were efficient and friendly. This is a good mid-range choice.

We stayed here for 3 nights after a 3 week trip travelling Australia. The location is the best thing going for this hotel, right next to all the bars and restaurants on South bank and just a 5 minute walk to the train and tram stations. The price was very good considering its central location, and one of the very few mid-range hotels I could find in the whole of Melbourne!

The rooms are very basic and quite shabby in parts. The bathroom needed quite a bit of updating and a lot of the furniture was stained. The bed also seemed very old and in need of replacement.

Wifi was $12 per hour, the internet is no longer a luxury, everyone has a laptop or smart phone these days so why the need to charge so much?

They do have free bus links to the airport sky bus which was good. However a taxi from the airport cost $60 to get here!!

The standard of hotels in Australia was surprisingly low considering what you pay, I would normally expect to pay around £40 in the UK for this standard of room, however Australia charge $120!! Only expect a great hotel if you are prepared to pay £400 upwards, otherwise good mid-range options are few and far between in Australia!

Dear lilgreeny,

Thanks for taking the time to provide your detailed comments.

I am very pleased to let you know that we are in the process of replacing all beds throughout the hotel. So far we have replaced all beds on 5 of our 11 floors and by mid-March 2013 all rooms will have brand new beds.

We are also working on a bathroom upgrade project and hope to have that commencing in the coming months. This will include new tiles, shower screens and vanity tops. We are very much looking forward to showcasing our new and improved rooms in their entirety towards the end of 2013.

We appreciate the time you have taken to provide us with your comments.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at the hotel.

Room is small and very average. Sheets don't fit the bed. Wifi, at $20/day, is spotty at best, can't track a FedEx package, though I did find a new hotel and wrote this review. AC must stay on full time or cannot keep up.

If all you want is someplace near Southbank, it's OK but still a marginally appointed hotel. I won't think about staying here again.

We really wanted to like this place, it has so much going for it in terms of location and is good value. A few things irked us and left us a little disappointed.

Firstly, the water pressure in the shower was very inconsistent, one minute it was fine, then next it would drop and there would be no hot water for a little while. This happened every time we showered. Things were chaotic at the front desk, both when we checked in and when we checked out. It was busy, and people were pushing in because they "just need to check out", as we were patiently waiting to do. It was disappointing that the desk staff responded to people who just pushed straight up to the counter and insisted they were served straight away when the rest of us were waiting our turn to do the same thing. There was no clear place to form a queue so a crowd just congregates around the desk and I can see why the staff probably get flustered. We were lucky that the swipe card for our room worked without any problems, we spoke to a guy who had been back and forth from reception 3 times before his card worked! The hotel provided soap and a small tube of shampoo and conditioner, but disappointingly, no shower cap. I know this is probably to save money and keep rates down, but a shower cap is often a standard inclusion and it's annoying to find yourself without one when you need it! Our room had a few maintenance issues, one of the lights didn't work, the bathroom door did not shut properly and despite having the air conditioner on it was very warm in the room. The bed sheet had a tear in it. Just lots of little things we noticed that made us feel like we weren't really staying anywhere that special. As we were staying for only one night however, we didn't bother requesting these issues to be resolved.

On a more positive note, we were happy with the cleanliness of the room, and our room had a nice glimpse of the river and Flinders street. The room had a microwave, kettle and sink, as well as a small fridge and some crockery and cutlery. You could easily prepare and enjoy breakfast in your room if you wished, there was a table and two chairs in the room. The location was great, we had an evening planned along Southbank and it was an easy walk home at the end of the night and thankfully nice and quiet in the hotel. We thought the $12 overnight parking deal with the nearby shopping centre car park was reasonable. We thought the hotel looked much better in real life than it did in the photos.

Overall, I am not sure if we would stay here again or maybe try something different next time. I would not advise against the Travelodge, but the disappointments we had mean we just can't rave about. I understand it is a more budget friendly hotel, we had just hoped for a little more than what we experienced.

Dear MissLouise83,

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your detailed comments. I am disapointed to read that your experience was not to the standard we would expect and be assured I will be addressing your concerns with the Maintenance and Housekeeping teams with regard to the issues in your room.

With regard to your experience at Reception, I will also be raising this at our upcomming front office team meeting to discuss ways we can improve the flow of service during our busy periods. We certainly should be recognising the guests who have been queeing and assisting them in the order they joined the queue.

I would encourage you to consider staying with us again in the future and welcome you to contact me personally at the hotel so that I can ensure you are well looked after and you have the true Travelodge experience.

Thank again for your feedback and we look forward to an opportunity to welcome you back again sometime soon.

Warm Regards,

We arrived on an early flight via Skybus(excellent service to the door) expecting to leave our luggage but this was no problem as we were given room access immediately by most helpful front -of-deskstaff. I deal and reasonably-priced location for Southbank restaurants, shows, tennis and shopping. Highly recommended!

Rooms are mostly clean but small and basic. Cheap furniture abounds. Otherwise comfortable and if you are after nothing more than a place to sleep then this suits admirably. Close to Southbank restaurants and only a short and pleasant stroll from city centre and Skybus terminus (the best way to get from the airport). Leave plenty of time if you want to enter or exit the hotel as there are only two lifts and you can wait for ages.
