“Small but very nice hotel. Good value for money.”
Reviewed February 16, 2010

We came to Melbourne for the special Chinese New Year and Valentine's weekend. Our 1st stay at Causeway, 2 nights.

The hotel doesn't have a lobby or door man, which is fine to us as we never sit in hotels' lobby nor ask door man to help carrying things.

While we were booking for the hotel, we read a lot reviews said about the room is tiny, However we found it's not at all. Having a king bed, 2 comfy single couches, a coffee table, and a massive writing desk, the room still have some decent space. I would say it's moderate.

The minibar and closet is compact but well-managed.

The room is not sparkling clean but overall it's pretty good.

While in a such central place, it's pretty quiet. I didn't hear any street/bar noise at all at night. Maybe my room was on the top(5th) floor and not facing towards street.

The complementary continental breakfast was good. We also want to thank for the complementary chocolate, apples and morning newspapers.

Will stay again.

One thing we found awkward is the hand-washing basin. It's really hard to wash your hands. I took a picture of it, will upload it later soon.

Reasonably priced hotel in a great central location.
Room was a fair size and clean and the furnishings were good and reasonable modern. Though the underlying building is tired (hallways, walls, ceilings, lift etc.) it has been refurbished and is clean and tidy.
Our room was by the lift and you could hear the creaking of it when used but otherwise it was fine.
The restuarant is basic and fine for breakfast but theres a nice laneway cafe at the front door thats fantastic.
Nice roof top garden.
Overall its a basic hotel in an awesome loccation.

I recently stayed at the Hotel Causeway 10-12 October 2009 and upon check-in I was impressed with the front office staff, they very were helpful; pity the rest of the staff were not as efficient.

The bed in room which I stayed was two single mattresses pushed together. The beds are well past their use by date and sag in the middle. It was not a comfortable sleep.
There is mould between the edge of the spa bath and wall.
The sink taps leaked water whenever the taps were used.

The room safe did not work throughout the stay. Despite requesting this to be repaired on the Saturday evening with the reception staff nothing was done about it during the stay. The young lady I raised it with seemed disinterested. (From my examination it appears that the battery needed replacing in the safe).

I purchased internet access and whilst the internet worked in the morning, I could not log on in the afternoon. Again when I raised this with the staff at reception, I came away with the impression that they could not be bothered listening to my concerns and I was essentially brushed off.

The hotel has so much potential with the proximity to the CBD and laneway culture. I however would have serious reservations in staying in this hotel again based on my experiences. Pity that when I took the time to write to management/completing the feedback form they did not bother responding; this is indicative of the malaise that affects this hotel.

We arrived quiet early about 11.30 am and check in was 2pm. We were allowed to go up to our room on arrival. The room was reasonable sized with a fairly large flat screen TV and a couple of extra chairs and room to move. It was the executive room and our deal included a daily continental breakfast on the second floor. The breakfast was rather good as continentals go, with fresh fruit, four choices of juices, cereals, toast, jams, yoghurt, slced meat and cheeses, coffee, tea.
The view was bland, looking over to buildings but the area was very quiet at night which was great.
The location of the hotel can be a problem as there is no driveway or parking area. Tour buses and hotel transfer companies may not always be able to pull in out front. The hotel entrance is actually in a small deadend lane, that houses a small cafe next door and some of the up and coming designers in Melbourne. It is in Howey Place which is off Little Collins Street. Perhaps that helps it to be quiet at night due to the fact the boutiques close at a reasonable hour below.
We were in the thick of it so to speak, with only one street to Swanston Street, one to Bourke St and in short walking distance to the Lanes of Melbourne and the shops. Nearby was the Royal Arcade ( architecturally interesting) and also Block Arcade. David Jones and Myers Department stores were just across the road and The Causeway up the street. It houses quiet a few outdoor eateries and a nice bakery.
I would stay in this hotel again if I was going to Melbourne as it's location is superb, the beds comfortable and serviced daily. The hotel actually sit above shops on the corner of Howey Place and consists of about 40 odd rooms.
The staff were very obliging and friendly during our stay.

This is a cute little hotel in a fantastic location. Literally in the heart of Melbourne with fabulous access to all the cafes, restaurants, theatres and sights of the city. But location can't be the only shining feature of the hotel. The rooms were nice. Our room was a Junior Suite that was clean, with decent furnishings. I agree with another reviewer about the sink taps....a bit awkward to use. The bed had seen better days, as it was quite saggy in the middle. Great for cuddling, but not the best for a good nights sleep. Nice little touches like chocolates and robes help overlook some things, and overall the room was nice. Our big complaint about the room was the smell coming from the drains in the bathroom. It was quite overpowering at times, and nothing could be done about it. It was not a sewage smell, but rather a musty old pipe smell.

Maybe a bit overpriced. And I am one to believe that for close to $200/night the hotel can at least provide complimentary internet access.

We arrived by plane, and I can imagine this would be a challenging place to stay if you had a car. Not sure where parking is available and how much extra it is. The continental breakfast is a nice touch, and like most places, there is nothing special about the hotel breakfast. No need to try the hotel coffee maker....that's sacreligious when there is fantastic coffee just outside the hotel.

Probably the biggest disappointment we had with the hotel was with the staff. It wasn't that they were rude or anything, it just felt like they always had more important things to do. In all, a nice hotel, in a great location.

5 out of 5 for location. In the heart of melbourne with shops, cafe's and theatres right next door. If you are in Melbourne to visit, shop and watch the theatre, this hotel is the one for you.

It is quite obvious that this hotel has been refurbished as the rooms look quite new. The rooms were also quiet and the bed was very comfortable.

The only downside was probably the stains around the room. Also, the design of the bathroom basin was weird. Taps were awkward to use. But if you can see through all that, this hotel was great! (Be aware, with the cafes just below and around the hotel, its probably not worthwhile eating the free breakfast...... very plain!)
