It was with trepidation that I booked (as in not rebook with another Hotel ) Rendezvous Melbourne for an 11 night stay including Christmas and into the New Year ; our 40th wedding anniversary too. Yes , the hotel is a little like Dame Maggie Smith. Older than some, perhaps a little tired at times but still beautiful and can still sparkle.
We were fortunate to have everything we requested - upper floor larger room with a total view of the Yarra and Southgate area. Bathroom was teeny though - could shower and use loo all at same time but hey - if you want location, hotel facilities a la Langham etc., then go and pay the prices! Watching the NYE 'build up' along Flinders St., was amazing. It was an epic night really! The firework display was all round.....amazing and truely an experience!
Then we were treated to a birds eye view of all the fireworks display from our little balcony / deck! We had a most memorable night!
All staff members were very willing and helpful for us - room service x 2 nights was excellent.
Room was cleaned reasonably well each day except for C'mas Day [no service unless requested] We cleaned the windows to our wee deck and yes, there was bird's pooh on the balcony. What do you expect when birds live in a city? for us (maybe we more pragmatic than most?) and we had 'very special visitors on C'mas day and NY Day......see photo attached.
The hotel is very central to all facilities, Flinders St., Station [yes there is noise but if you want a stay in the country don't holiday in a city!] SHOPS! Trams to David Jones, Myers, Vic. Market and all others in between!, Federation Square, MCG, information Centre and trip 'hotel pick ups' use Flinders St., as drop / stop off point.
We are in late 60s and like our comforts etc., We had a great stay.
Thank you Rendezvous.
o and yes, we did meet 1 or 2 disenchanted stayers but in the main most seemed happy. Melbourne Rendezvous is an experience of 'Days Gone By' - yes, the rooms may be small, in the day that the Hotel was built there was no such thing as an 'en suite'.....you need to think 'communal bathing facilities / rooms' ; if the rooms are 'small' then remember that in the late 1800s 'you only slept in the room' ; if one wanted company / entertainment one used the Lounges or Reading Room or Billiard Room/s' ,
Yes, we would / will stay again - but only if the room was right!! .
